Default 273 adjustable rockers

what are the limits of the adjustable 273 rockers? like how many revvs can they handle before they explode?

its not the revs, but the spring pressure you have to be cognizant of - anything over 300# open would be risky.

hello, explode?? we run them on stock eliminator 340, 360, turn them 7300 rpm in the traps. spring pressure is in the 135# seat and 350 open. used them in a 273 stocker years ago, turned it 7500 lots. guess lucky, never exploded any. just food for thought. with a roller cam and a ton of valve spring pressure, then might have problems?

When my wife drove my car for the first time she thought my 727 was a four speed... she shifted into nuetral at about 80 MPH with the motor wrapping 6200 and it hit 8000 before she dropped it back in to drive. I have this all on tape since I was riding with her in the car down the dragstrip, and I briefly lowered the camera and pointed it directly at my tach when it happened. Ouch!

Point being is that this is a set of 273 rockers. After this happened, I did not hear any ticks or valvetrain noise at all, and the car did not drop off in ET at all either.

I would highly recommend replacing the stock adjusters with new MP adjusters and locks. The oriignal 273 rockers have a very poor mechanism for not backing out. So poor that it is non existant... a common practice with these is to score the threads with a file to help it hold the adjustment. Common, but not the best idea....

273 rockers were forged pieces, the 340 TA pieces were cast! The adjusters were friction (interference) locked, and the book says if they dont hold 15 ft/lb (or some torque figure) while adjusting, you need to replace the rocker.

I use the Crane # 99802-16 . You just have to make sure the surface that the lock nut contacts is flat and true. I have many runs on them with 7000+ shifts. I also groove the shafts for oiling. The stock shafts for adjustable rockers should have the grooves. Dan

hello, mopar and crane adjusters have had problems. they are either soft or to hard. smith bros. pusrods sells the best adjusters and nuts.they are a 12 point nut, lot easier to get a socket on them. just food for thought.
