Default 727 cable shift vs pushbutton

Hi all.
I have a question concerning the differences between the 1962-1964 pushbutton and the 1964-1965 cable shifted 727. Are the transmission ends of the shifter cables the same? What I want to do is build a second 727 for my Dart, but will use a 1965 case rather than the early case.

When I built my pushbutton 10 years ago, I updated it to a 24 spline input and a slip-yoke output. I plan to update the 1965 to a 24 spline input as well so it will be ready for the tranny swap when the time comes.

Thanks

The transmission end of the cable core is different, the PB has a narrow retaining groove and the console/column has a wide groove. The adapters that the cable plugs into are also different, the PB adapter is retained in the roostercomb with a nut while the console/column adapter is retained by an "E" clip. The two won't interchange in the roostercomb due to different shaft size.

The PB cable will work in the '65 valve body but not vice versa.

Thanks John. Great pictures.
I should have no problem using my existing pre-65 cable on the 65 transmission with any 65 or earlier valvebody.

Red face

30 years ago i had a 65 coronet 426 4 speed.A friend had a beefed 63 pb.727 so i bought it.I got tired of breaking things,so i changed it over. All went well til i went to connect the cable, obvious difference as Johns pix show, wouldnt pick up the gears correctly.Enter backyard engineering.I measured the width of the lock groove in the 65 cable, took the pb.cable adapter cut a partial slot the width of the groove away from the original lock spring slot, rounded up another lock spring, installed it on the adapter, taking all the play out of the 65 cable and adapter. It worked ,only thing you dont have park.Oh well,at least i got it going,it was my everyday driver. P.S. The precision tool i cut the slot with was a hacksaw.God,ya gotta love those times.

All of the '62-'65 valve bodies are physically interchangeable, the difference is in the shifter related parts (roostercomb, cable adapter, manual valve), everything else is the same.

John,

Not being a tranny guy, what do I need to use/assemble to make this work?

I have both a 64 BB PB and a 65 CS tranny on the garage floor.I want to keep the PB set-up as it's going in a 64 330, but want to use the slip yoke for convenience. Can I just change tail shafts?

I've also heard that there are some other mods to do so a later converter could be used.

The work will be farmed out to a pro shop,I just need to make sure I give him all the parts and mods to do the job correctly.

Thanks

You could swap the '65 tailshaft and housing into the '64 but it would be much easier to just swap the '64 PB valve body into the '65.

The pre-'67 trans can be modified to use the late converter, all that's needed is to replace the existing input shaft and reaction shaft support with the same parts from a '67-'70. The parts from a '71-'73 can also be swapped in but the matching front clutch drum would also need to be swapped in due to its wider bushing.
