Default 727 Questions

One silly question and one serious question.

Silly one: I'm bilding a 440 stroker motor. The block I'm using is a `71 440 marked "HP". The transmission I've just purchased is a: 1971 model, build date 4-Jan, part #35158471). G. Govier's parts book shows this was used "on '71 and early `72 C-body 440's except HP". I asume that the trans will still bolt up to my block? (The reason I can verify this is that the tans is in my garage while the block is in a machine shop about 60 miles away...)

Seroius question: After pressure washing the trans, I've found a crack on one of the upper mounting holes. One of the non-threaded ones. The crack runs vertically from the edge of the case, gaps the hole and then turns horizontal. Overall length is about 3/4" in the vertical and 1" in the horizontal. 727's are pretty much impossible to find where I live. I purchased this one from a reputable Mopar resto yard in Dallas. The trans wasn't too expensive $200), but the shipping added another $150. I'm sure the seller had no idea that there was a crak in the case. However, to swap it out would involve two more shipments, which means I'd have $650 in the puppy - before restoring it. Probably not a good deal. Is it possible/feasible to repair the crack? Is it worth worring about? The new engine will be pretty stout, but the car won't get driven very much (maybe 50 miles a month..)

Thanks,
Steve

It'll fit, but the crack needs to be fixed. Have you looked for a local place to weld it up?

Confused Crack

Make sure they drill a hole at the end of the crack before they weld it. This will stop the crack from going any farther.
