Default Distributors Interchangeable?

Are all small block distributors interchangeable? Are there any differences between years besides older distributors not being electronic controlled? Would I have a problem putting an 88 318 distributor on an 86 318?

No problem, swap them out. The way there triggered or not is the difference. Example would be points, electronic or lean burn.
Another cave eat would be caps for the mech. tach version or not. Caps do not interchange between that and yours.

So an 88 distributor cap won't fit 86 distributor. What do you mean by lean burn? Would there be a problem being a putting a lean burn distributer on the 86 318?

If you have a MoPar Performance mech. tach distrbutor or a points distributor, then that cap will not fit the electronic distributors. The answer was very straight foward. Now it should be crystal.

A lean burn distributor is a computer controld ignition system with the vaccum advance on the computer. The distributor is just a triggering unit at this point. It can be used in most any mopar without problems. A dead give away of a lean burn distributor is that it does not have a vaccum advance on it.
