Default AVS electric choke??

Well, first order of business for this '72 Satellite I bought is to get it to start easily when it is cold. The "bubba" I bought it from swapped the stock 2 bbl and intake for a aluminum intake and Carter AVS. That is fine accept there is no provision for a thermostatic choke in the intake. So, now there is NO choke at all. I was thinking there was an aftermarket electric choke kit for the AVS out there. Since Edelbrock now has the "thunder series" carb which is a AVS actually I wonder if they have an electric choke that will fit.

Are they any different than the AFB electric chokes?

I don't think the factory AVS has the vacuum provisions needed for the bolt-on electric choke.

The carb can converted. Give me a little time and I'll set up pictures. The vaccum hole on AFBs behind the choke are on the AVS. You'll just need to drill and tap the correct size of the screws being used.
I used a Edelbrock AFB choke of a scrap carb. Used the linkage as well.

Cool. So there is no factory provision for an electric choke but the casting is there for it. Interesting.

Hummm, When you unscrew the AVS' vaccum can off the side, the mounting points need to be drilled and taped. (Wish I had pictures for this) The lower hole on the AFB is there on the AVS. I think thats the vaccum sorce your looking for. To pull on the piston inside the choke houseing.

Sounds pretty easy to setup. NOW< if you can give me a source for the electric choke for my 9800S Superquad. They much be made of unobtainium.

Ya, it's easy to do. But you are right about that T-Q choke. They are made of unobtainium. This rare and allmost non-existant metal has been hunted again and again for years with few success stories to be rumored in the past. Nothing concreate has turned up.

To help with this problem, I fooled around with the AFB choke and some metal. I came up with my own solution to the problem.
I'll take pictures after baby sitting chores are done tonight.
Please stand by.

Default Avs

Dr.R;

OK, here we go. test picture since I'm not more than a point and click guy. Humph, a little small, but it'll do.

Remove choke vacuum canister (2 screws), choke operating link (Linkage part) and vacuum tube and tube port on the carb itself. Visegrips or pliers to twist it back and forth until it comes out. Remove choke lever and spacer. Now the side of the carb looks bare. Also included is a shot of the OE part from another AVS. (pic 0438)

From here, we use all AFB parts. Drill out solid boss's on carb where the AFB choke was screwed in. The screw size I have is 8/32's. Which i grabed from Sears. The drill bit use I think was a #9. Check yours before you purchase anything.

You can see in the picture I messed up the upper right boss. It had no effect. Just tighten down well.

Replace with AFB choke housing, choke link and chokeuse the AFB choke lever without the spacer from the AVS.
(Pic 0433)
Place on brass cover, place black cap on and make sure the metal spring captures the (green in this picture) choke tang that moves the choke link. Index the mark on the black housing to the second mark foward the middle mark on the aluminum base housing. Secure with 3 screws and hold downs.
(Pic 0435 & 0436 )
Attach the ground wire, which I ran under, through and around the back to attach up top the airhorn attaching screw.

Default T-Q electric choke experiment

Since we discussed the rare earth metal, "Unobtainium" before, I used the AFB choke in a arkward way, but, never finished it off. (Read; Test it) Though ruff, it gives an idea of what could be done. I do believe it would work.
Heres some pictures, some blurry, of what I fooled around with in an effort to go around the problem of not having a choke well for a T-Q and NOT hook up a manual choke cable. There very sensitive to it's position.

The main idea is to position the choke so theres no binding and full free movment of the rod. The rod should be as close to level as you can get it.
The metal brackets were hanging around, so I drilled them and the plate they are fixed to. The plate had the holes made long length wise for adjustment, fore and aft of it's position.
The holes where the choke are attached to the brakets are also made long in a vertical way for adjustment up and down
Once positioned, it was tightened down. You could play friz-bee with this when I was done.

Just saw an AVS Thunderjet 650 CFM series at Pep Boys and it had an electric choke on it.
