Default 302 Heads

I am running basically a stock 318 with just a few minor mods. It is currently the stock lower end, with a 292/292 214/214 449/449 Erson cam with AMC lifters, double roller timing chain, a cast 360 intake, and a Quadrajet. I am getting headers headers for it within the next couple of months, and I was also planning on getting a set of 302 heads for it. I was just wondering what everyone thought about putting the stock 302 heads on my motor will do, and also if anyone had any years and models of vehicles that came with the 302's from the factory. Thanks.

Eric

Another, and maybe even better solution might be Magnum heads. The 302 heads need porting and bigger valves to be really worthwhile, but the magnum heads aer pretty good "out of the box" and may be easier to find used. You just have to get a new intake too, Edelbrock has RPM intake for magnums and so does Pro Form, or what ever it was?

I looked into the magnum heads, but I am a college student with a VERY limited budget. I thought about getting the magnum heads and just redrilling the intake, as I already have the correct lifters, so all I would need would be the pushrods. If I can find a set of magnum heads, and also finally get ahold of my local speed shop to see about drilling, I might do that. But for now I want to plan on a set of 302 heads that I can just bolt on for a little more UMPH until I can actually afford to do what I want to the motor. Thanks.

Will magnum heads bolt up on a LA block? If so is a different intake required? Last questions is what year is the Magnum blocks?

magnum 318's are 92, and 360's 93. yes they will bolt up, but need some mods. there is some threads on it, also check hot rod and car craft

Default Magum heads 1992

Hi All;

1992 was the first year of the Magnum engine. The magnum heads bolt up ( use either head gasket ) but the intake will not (besides it a FI intake) , Edelbrock makes a RPM airgap that bolts on or Mopar makes M1 intake. Both are dual plane. Lifters need to be AMC type (HT-2011) and push rods that oil through. Valve sizes 1.92 intake and 1.625 on exhaust. Intake port volume is ~155cc but velocity is better and intake to exhaust balance is 80% without porting. Plus the combustion chamber is ~60cc which helps 318 build some compression. The engine done this way only needs 34* total timing due to efficent combustion chamber...
