Default interior/dash lights

Has anyone found a way to rewire the dash and overhead lights(compass & temp) to allow a brighter setting when driving in daylight with the headlights on? The gauges are set so deeply into the dash that they are very hard to read. The switch on the turn signal stalk will brighten some of the lights but not all of them. It makes the shift indicator and the radio lights brighter but not the gauge lighting.

there may be a brighter bulb available for a replacement. this might not be advisable, though, because of the heat involved.
