There external, but if your building one for performance have your machine shop rebalance it to internal and it will last a lot longer and it will be moe accurate.

Cool, so I won't need to run that special flex plate, right?

Only the cast crank 400 was externally balanced, a small number of them (trucks/4-speed cars) were produced with forged cranks.

Bob, you will need it unless you have it intermally balanced by your machine shop when you build it.

I am going to have it internally balanced then as I'm using new rods and KB pistons, new bearings of course and total seal rings.

Good deal, since it will need balancing anyway and this will help it last longer.

Question revisit this........

My machineshop says it's gonna be about $375.00 to balance the crank and I've gotta run some special damper ($$$$$$)? Tryin to keep the cost down so if I want to keep it externally balanced what damper can I use? Mancini has a BHJ for about $ 310.00 and I found one from Performance Products (PowerForce) for about $ 150.00 that you bolt weights to depending upon your application. What do you guys think. This is a street application.

Wink

For a street application just use an oem balancer (damper). Why bother spending $300. for an item that will give you 0 performance increase.

GO ahead and have it internally balanced and get a new stock oem balancer from Mancini for a lot less than a race type dampner. Your better off going this way.

If you have a cast crank can you internal balance? Getting a 383 crank would be alot cheeper than expensive balancers. 383 being a forged crank and therefore heavey enough to internal balance.

All stock 400's are cast crank just like the 360's and they can be easly balanced internally. We do it to all our race engines.

I never, never, ever could understand the reasoning of throwing 300-500 dollars of mallory into a casting. Any casting. Get a 383 crank or just use the stock balancer with the casting. Putting mallory in a cast crank is like putting a chrome rearend in a circle track car.

Wrong as usual, there were forged 400 cranks; used in HP 4-speed cars and manual transmission trucks.
