318 to 360
I need to change the engine in my pickup,it has a 318 in now with a 3speed manual trans,if I come across a 360 what would I need to change with the 3spd trans?I just put a new clutch kit in.

360's are balanced differently, so you would need (at least) a 360 dampner and flywheel. I've never run a 360 with a stick, so IDK what else. Sorry. Jay |

Your on it SixGunner, just make sure the back of the crank can accept the tranny. There not all drilled at the crank for this.
Almost forgot, the motor mounts are different, just use some washers to take up the space when you reuse the 318 tfor the 360 engine. This is not a big thing. |

Thanks RF.
I did think of one other thing, you reminded me of it with the crank comment... You'll probably need a pilot bearing (bushing) for the input shaft of the tranny to slide into too. Jay |

oil pan is also different.
Make you sure you get a 360 with a truck pan on it, the 318 truck pan won't work. I have seen templates on line, for how to remove material from a neutral balance flywheel to make it work for a 360. You'll find if you can't do it yourself(with the templates, you should be able to), that the cost for a machine shop to do it is very high. |

thank a lot for the info,I didn't know you could not swap the oil pans. This isn't a hot-rod so a 318 will do,maybe I'll use a set of 360 heads to help the 318 breath. The truck is two wheel drive and I run the highway with it to get to work.I'm not worried about the low end tork because I'm turning 3000rpm at 60 now. Thanks again for the info,,,speedfreak.

Your better off pocket porting the 318 heads before stepping up to a 1.88 valve 360 head.

Actually I think you'll find your best gains by changing the cam. I have a 4.10 geared B300 van with a 318 and one of the best things I did was use a 360 2bbl cam. It's just enough extra duration over the 318 cam that it really helped the breathing on the highway even with the 2 bbl and single exhaust. What are your goals for the vehicle anyway?

for now I use it to get to work and putts around in,I'm slowly doing body work, once the body is done I plan on a 518 auto and a 360 around 400to425 hp,it won't be ready for the new combo until next year.

That's an ambitious power goal for a pickup. If you want that kind of power in a pickup you'd better have a blower or a big block. A 400hp 360 isn't going to be much fun in something that heavy. This is just an opinion and it's worth what you paid for it.
