Default Question on J heads......

I have a set of J heads, late 72, and just had them redone with 2.02's and 1.6's. I told the guy to put hardened seats in but he forgot what I told him. How long will they last with todays gas running on the street?

Thanks.:chainsaw:

Never been an issue for us. Even better if your running SS valves.

Default That is what I put in......

I decided to go with the stainless valves. I was thinking of driving this thing almost every day.

You'll be fine. You won't get 100,000 miles without needing a touch-up of the valve seats, but that shouldn't be a concern.

Not exactly sure.... but late 72's might already have the hardened seats from the factory. If you have the heads off, look REAL closely around the exhaust valve and see if you can see a real faint ring around the valve diameter on the cylinder head. It might not be visible though. They just more or less heat treated the area around and slightly under the valve. At least this is what Ive read.

If you're not towing or carrying heavy loads, it shouldn't be a problem.

If you are careful with your cam selection, you can get one with "quiet" lobes. Not that the lobes make noise themselves, but rather how hard they let the valve slam shut. THe VooDoo is a good one for that, also Comp has a good setup with the Xtreme Energy line. This will extend the life of your seats. My .02. :-)PCRMike

Default I already have the cam.......

I have a Racer Brown that he ground for me. It's 238 @ .050 w/ .485 lift. Intake c/l is 105 and ex is 111 c/l.
So it isn't a real aggressive cam, but good for street/strip.

This should do okay. The thing I was talking about is the graduation of the ramp. The ramp is the side part of the lobe, where the lifter is pushed open to it's peak. The illustration of a smoother or slower closing side shows that as the lifter slides down the closing face to the base circle, the angle lessens, and it doen's "slap" the valve shut. This is what I was talking about. Racer Brown cams are good for power, and well-made, but the ramps aren't as conducive to street as they are for the track. Good stuff yes, but you may get 50K miles before valvetrain slop or slack becomes an issue. :-) PCRMike

Default I agree.......

The biggest thing I can think of is to keep the spring pressures down so the valve contacts with the least impact. My seat pressure is 120 with an open pressure at 290 lbs. Far cry from the BB heads I have with 2.14/1/81's and triple springs. They aren't for use with unleaded heads either.
