stroked 440 question
Thinking of building a stroked 440 with a 4.15 crank. What are the cubes with standard bore? Also is the any block work that needs to be done for clearance with stock length rods? Can I expect a good increase in torque and horsepower by doing this? The current parts I have for this build is a 850 speed demon carb. M1 mopar intake, super comp hooker headers with 2" primarys. I am buying Edelbrock performer heads and crane gold roller rockers. Thinking about calling hughes about a cam. The crank I am looking at is made by Eagle. The same web site sells the pistons for this motor made by ross with 10.80 to 1 comp with 84cc heads. I have a 3000 stall, 3:91 gears and 29" tires. The car is a 1972 'cuda to be driven a little on the street but mostly at the strip. Does this stuff sound like a good combo? Thanks 72cuda

Stroke that baby up!
Get the block sonic checked. See if you
can bore it out to 4.38 or .060 over. Then you will have 500 ci. www.440source.com has a kit for under $1400. Don't know how you feel about overseas parts, but that's a different story. I hear if the parts are off by .001 he will replace them or refund your money. You will want a main stud girdle for the bottom end www.hughesengines.com sells a nice one for under $400. Now cylinder heads. Used to be, you had 1 or 2 to choose from. Now a guy can't make up his mind. Indy E-Z, Edelbrock RPM, and Mopar stage VI. For a few more $ you have Indy 440-1, and Brodix B-1. In about a month or so, we should know how good the Edelbrock big block Victor heads are. Do it up! With all the stuff coming out for Mopar it's like Christmas! |

Whata re you trying to build?
A good cheap build is the 415 crank with stock rods, and std 400 pistons. It's 22 overbore and cheap. I think you end up with a 9 something to one 490" motor |

440 stroker
I would caution against buying a stroker kit from anyone except a reputable "real" machine shop like Hughes or Muscle motors opr someone like that. There is a reason the others are so cheap and it's not just the parts. Do your homework.

Thanks for the advice chumley. I have kinda wondered why the kit was only $1389 myself. I did find an Eagle crank only for $710 and ross pistons for this set up for $535. Anyway thanks for the input.

I agree you get what you pay for, but I don't kn ow about how we can accurately put what supplier in what group.
The 440 source stuff has been priced well, with a lot of online users, and not many complaining. I've heard different talk about where hughes get's his stuff. Price is definately a big factor to be a supplier of his, so be leary of quality no matter who you buy from. |
