Default Torque Converter opinions

I am getting ready to buy the TC for the 904 that Im building and I called Summit and they recommended the TCI Breakaway 11" converter. I was looking around on Ebay and found an ACC Boss Hog 11" converter with the same stall speed as the TCI for about $60 less. I love to save money where I can, but I dont want to buy something that either wont work or wont hold up. Anyone have any experience with the ACC TCs? I know that TCI has an excellent reputation so I know im ok with that one, but if the ACCs are just as good, Ill pick one up instead. That would just save $60 that I could spend elsewhere.

Never heard of them, but if it was my $60 bucks hands down I'd get the TCI converter for sure. One of the best around and they stand behind there work. It's the only brand I use.

I had one of there convertors, stall was rated a 3000 , it stalled at about 2200. Had one of there trannys, it died after 500 miles, cost me 200 bucks to ship to ALambama to get it warrantied, it came back after 6 months, still didnt work.

Really, cause TCI is in Ashland,MS. And if you look on there site or warranty return cards like the one on my new tranny out in the shop it clearly states it must be shipped back to TCI in Ashland, Ms. freight and insured pre paid and you must als get a return number from them before you ship it. THey make all repairs in Ashland,MS. After looking at there site map, all they have in Alabama is about a half dozen distributors. They even state that they will repair there competitors trannies as well.

IT tells you that right there on the warranty card and there web site. You have to call and get a return number, and pre pay frieght and insure it before they will accept it. At least it's right there up front for anyone to see, it's not hidden. I myself am glad that I have never had a failure or had to return anything yet. Can't say that about others we tried in the past.

and they wanted me to pay the freight back the second time. i sent it to a local shop, been in business for 50+ years, the owner said the tranny was nothing more than a cheap rebuid, most parts were not replaced, and a shift kit.

Angry I tried to contact ptc.........

I filled out their spec sheet on two visits to the web site and ask for recomendations. They don't list the stalls on their homepage so I needed to find out more. They didn't even bother to get in touch with me.
If they don't care to talk to me, well you know what I think and saying it in a public forum isn't going to help. What's the purpose of haveing a web site if you don't monitor it and answer customers?

Arrow ACC Converter

I havent done alot with converters yet. I am an automotive college student and my buddy works at a very well known tranny shop in our area. I was looking at the same converters for my 727 on ebay and i told him about it and he asked his boss who said to take caution on non name brand converters. He has heard of them being removed from like caravans and other smaller trannys, cut apart, and having a few fins bent and parts replaced and painted. I'm not even sure if thats possible, but like i said thats just a possibiltiy and for $60 I would go for the name that will probley have a warranty of some type over an ebay converter. Good Luck!

That's the way most high stall conevrters are built. You take a junkyard core out of some smaller engine car and modify it to fit other applications. You can use better parts in there, and some even use new aftermarket housings, but in most cases you don't need them, just sepnding extra money on them. Usually you get what you pay for is very true with the converters as far as the quality of the parts used goes. That's why I recoomended PTC, they are cheap but the performance is on the same level with more expensive converters. According to my experience, that's not the case with for exmaple TCI. Their cheap bulk converters are not very effective even if they worl, and their better converters are not cheap. As far as advertising a "one size fits all" converter according to a stall speed goes, it really shouldn't be done. The stall speed isn't dependent of only the converter itself, it's also affected by the engine and the car. Here is an example, a guy I know had two cars, a 1.3 litre Mitsubishi Lancer and a street race Valiant. While doing somthing to the Colts transmission, he figured that the splines in the trans were the same, so he thought that he could install the Lancers 8" converter to the valiant by just adding a tooth ring for the starter and and adapter to the hub. And he did; in the Colt the brake stall speed was 1300 rpm, and in the Valiant it was 5500. However, the stall speed isn't the only factor in a race converter, and the Colts stocker was very uneffective despite of it's high stall.

Default Ptc..........

How did you get them to answer you?????????????????????? I tried and they wouldn't awnser me. I considered the setup and decided they were a company on the grow and they would want to work with us. They didn't even awnser me when I filled out their info page on two occasions. But then they are too busy to answer their web page!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Give me a break, they are trying to sell junk to someone who has a few dollars to spare OR NOTt. If you want to forward this to them, then do so. They treated me like I wasn't alive and didn't have any money so I have to beleive they are bullshit.
I am far from rich but I do okay. I drive a truck and get by so that isn't among my worries. Tell them they suck and are fine without my business.

Welcome, anytime. I think you will be quite happy with that choice. Nice thing about TCI is if you will give them all your specs they can build a converter to match your combo so you can get the most out of it.

All converter builders do that. TCI can make good converters, but those do not cost 60$, or even 600$.

I just got my converter from PTC on Monday, which wasn't supposed to be here until today. I submitted a spec sheet to them and it took them around 5 to 7 days to get back to me, but they did send me an e-mail with their suggestion.

I called them later that day, ordered the suggested converter and they said they had to build it, which would take about a week. It looks like a nice piece and I can't wait to try it out.

Maybe I just got lucky. You could try calling them, their number is 256-383-6868, the guy's name that I talked to was Lane.
