Is it a big block, and automatic?

I have no idea what the numbersw mean. John Kunkle will know.

BUT, I do know that if the car is a BB and an auto, it's a 727. There was no other automatic for a Big block.

Any of the raised casting numbers on the transmission aren't much use for ID purposes, look for the part number stamped in the case on the drivers side just above the pan gasket. On '68 and later there is a raised boss on the passenger side bellhousing that will contain additional stamped info.

The rear end pictured in an 8 1/4".

DW will tell you that it is the greatest thing since sliced bread. The rest of us will tell you that you would be better off replacing it with an 8¾ or a Dana

You posted in the correct forum. The transmission forum is in the tech archives. Only a mod or admin can move things into that forum.

There is also a differential spotters guide, in the tech archives. It will help you to identify the MOPAR rears.

I'll agree with Ed on the diff thing, (for the most part anyway...LOL) and will just add that the 8 1/4 will take a bit of pounding, so it doesn't need to be an immediate upgrade.

example:
If the car still has drum brakes on the front, I would do a disc swap before I got too worried about doing the diff. my .02

I agree with that.

Also, being in the UK, the 8¾ upgrade would probably be rather expensive

It's probably cunifer tubing - it's a copper/nickel alloy and it's plenty strong enough. A lot of manufacturers in Europe use it now (like Volvo and Audi) and it's great to work with - it takes a bend beautifully, doesn't corrode and it's a piece of cake to flare.
