I have a '73 Newport 400 with a Holley 2 bbl. I have about 1000 miles on rebuilt distributor, new plugs and wires; and about 2500 miles on new chain and both sprockets. The old plugs were covered with soot and the inside of the tailpipe has been black for months. It always starts but runs poorly until warmed up; ie. misses and shoots fire out the exhaust. I suspect the carburator needs work and they have never been my strong point. Also, it sometimes has an intermittant high speed miss at steady throttle: punch it and it clears up and goes great until I try to resume a cruise mode and it's back to rough again. If it was a 2 cycle I would say it's four-cycling. Anybody ever have a similar problem or have any ideas?

Double check for vaccum leaks and go through your carb adjustments one by one.
