Default 426 Hemi Heads Pics

Ive not seen to many 426 ci hemi heads so i thought i might give others the same chance

Has anyone here ever even driven a hemi ?

I was told by an old timer that the 440 would actually beat a hemi out of the hole but in the end,
The Hemi would come blasting by when it gets stretched out there ,

I really do not consider a Hemi anything special, being "hemi hater #1". hadn't had an opprtunity to drive one until last year, when I tuned one for a couple of days. It was in a '68 Charger, according to the owner it had race hemi internals with a street hemi intake and carbs. I actually didn't quite believe it, because it run like an old boats engine, no valvetrain clatter from a solid cam or anything like that. Anyway, after playing with the carbs and timing a little, the car run a low 13 ET at a bit over 100 mph at an airport track, and the driver really wasn't a "pro". It was a a pretty nice working engine, very humble at low rpm and eager to wind high rpm. Would actually like to build one for someone one day, and see how it would run with the correct parts.

It's true the 440 would beat the HEMI in many street races. The problem with the HEMI is they would fall out of tune and be very cranky. Also down a few cubes doesn't help. The heads that make it different form the Wedge engines really shine big on the track where you can take advantage of the design.
A street strip HEMI car can be fearsome for sure. Todays parts a bit better than yesteyears parts. Carbs, intakes, cams, play big on this engine. If you build it to run, she will.

Hemi heads are made to rev. They worked great in nascar for that reason. Good Sustained high rpm performance.

In a drag car, they need a lot of converter, and cam to make good use of the breathing.

In a milder combo, the 440 is superior.

426 Hemi heads have very well breathing ports, a feature that the 60's wedges lacked. There was a shortage of cylinder head flow, and the Hemi heads cured that. The world has changed a little after the 60's.
