I want to build an 360 engine and follow the instructions from the December issue of Car Craft magazine. It show's how to build 9.5:1 360 Engine. With a bore of .030 over.and have high swirl heads 72cc. Also with a Dick Landy cam it a hydraulic flat-tappet:.480-/0.502-inch lift, 284/294duration. with headers and a 750 holley double pumper on a performer edelbrock manifold.

Please any suggestions would help alot.

With good heads (good valves, valve job and porting) this motor should make 400-450 horsepower. I don't have the article before me, but I wouldn't think they recommended the Edelbrock Performer intake; probably the Performer RPM. Do not confuse these two intakes, and do not use the standard Perfomer on any kind of performance 360. The Performer RPM, however, is in my opinion the best dual plane intake you can buy. See the discussion on single plane vs. dual plane.

The former mopar LA engine based Crate engine, 360 Super Commando, made 360 hp with about the same parts. I think you should be at about same level.

A 360 horse 360 MP crate motor has only a 9 to one compression and a milder cam than your suggested motor. Plus, these motors were deliberately underrated to compensate for any production variations.

Mopar Muscle got 390 horsepower from their 10 to one 360 with only a .480 cam.

Edelbrock got 397 horsepower from a 9.7 to one 340 with factory heads, Performer RPM cam (.488/.510 lift) and Performer RPM intake. With their aluminum RPM heads, they got 417 horsepower. I'm sure the factory cast iron head could be ported to achieve this power level. Plus, a 360 has 20 more cubes and should make more power than a 340 at the same compression ratio.

I think 400 plus horsepower is well within reason for a 360 with ported heads, decent compression ratio, .500 cam, good intake and headers.

The less you expect, the less disapointed you will be at the track. In the Edelbrocks 397 hp the heads weren't stock, they were ported. Same with the 451 hp 440, they were ported, had big valves, step pistons etc. It may make more than 360 hp, and actually even the crate engine made more than that but it was rated at 360. The Crate engine had 2.02/1.60 valves and they were pocket ported, the intake was a single plane etc., pretty much variables to estimate which engine should make more power. Anyway, in about 3400 lbs A- body with a decent drivetrain this thing should be deep in 12's, I think.

Well, I don't disagree with you here. I'd add that obviously the quality of the machine work and assembly will affect power, and sometimes a combination of parts won't work together as well as you think. But I do think it wouldn't be too hard to put together a 360 that would outdo MP's 360/360 crate motor.

Larry Shepard of Mopar Performance constantly preaches that we should lower the compression ratio for today's pump gas, and MP sells what purport to be 9 to 1 pistons that won't make that much compression ratio without head and/or block milling. Then they tell you to put a bigger cam in it to make up for the lower compression which seems a/backwards to me. Too many people trying to follow this advice wind up with 8 to one (or less) motors with big cams and then wonder why they don't run like they should.

Very true, I have done the overcam thing myself in a low CR engine; no power, no driveability. The 9:1 pistons MP sells are a joke, in a 440 with regular open chamber heads they are more like 7:1. I think the situation is the same with other engines too, ordinary smog pistons. The 360 /360 crate had KB pistons as far as I remember, and the actual CR was propably at the 9:1 level.

Not really.....PRO..(its short for my last name which is very long)

The March issue is still two months away on this side of the world.
