Hardly, fix the low compession and you have a bored out 383.
Swap in a remachined 440 crank and you have a 451 cid monster.
400s are one of the great performance secrets of the Mopar world, though not nearly so secret these days.

As was mentioned the 400 is a .090" overbored 383. It was saddled with low CR and smog equipment due to it's intro in the smog era.The B engines are capable of sustained 7000+RPM and very respectable HP levels.

Default I love 'em

you can often pick them up cheaply, do some milling and you've got a great hotrod motor for minimal outlay. do some searches on here about the 400 and you'll find some guys going fast for small $.

How much work is needed to install a 440 crank in 400 crank, ie; clearencing and such?

didn't say he could specifically, but people around here pull 'em out all the time for 440s or even 383s....so they are almost like slant sixes to a lot of people....just get them out of my garage.

In stock for...boat anchor, potental (sp), huge.
Even with the stock bore, they can be fun. There not big on torque being a short stroke engine, but they'll move nice.
Keith Black has pistons for these engines to get you (Near or at ) zero deck. That'll work wonders for your compresion problem.

The regular production cars didn't get big block engines in Australia; it was only the rebadged and left-hand conversion cars that did, and then, only for a few years. Parts availablity would likely be something of a problem there, necessitating ordering from a US distributor.

Default ok....

i get it that its hard for him because of where he is...but see this:

http://www.moparchat.com/forums/showthread.php?t=97634

and my other point is still valid, can be made to run hard for small out lay of cash. if he can come up with a 400 block and knows a competent machinist, fast he can go for cheap. if he didn't have access to one, why would he bring it up?

One more question, I know the B blocks certainly weigh more and are physically larger than LA blocks, but does anyone know by how much? Long block vs long block, for instance? curious to know if the usual aluminum manifold swap will reduce the weight to that of a small block and how much wider they are
