What would happen if....
Having a little argument with a buddy of mine who has the same motor as me, 74 360, he went with a .30 overbore but kept the stock size pistons, he did however go with the .30 over rings. My question is, will the motor tear it itself apart example: pistons slapping in the cylinder wall? or will it be fine but simply just not last as long?

Not likely
Not likely to last long at all. That to me would be a last ditch effort to get a motor together if I were stuck out in the middle of the desert or some other far off place with no other way back. The piston is going to try and turn sideways. Till it does it's going to rock back and forth on the on the rings and piston skirt. Just a waste of $$

And it will ruin a good block too. Pistons are cheap.

You are right, your buddy is on glue. To put a motor together, and expect it to run with .030 piston to wall clearance is simply ridiculous. Piston to wall clearance is normally .001 to .0015 per 1" of cylinder bore. So around .004 to .006 with a motor like this. Check piston to cylinder clearance in a manual, and you will find that there is now way it will work. If he is intent on running it, he can save some time and throw it straight on the scrap heap, and maybe set some money on fire while he's at it..... |

Hey mopar_man_11.....
LOL....I would love to be there with a six pack of beer and chair to kick back and watch when he tries to fire that thing!! Do you have a video camera? If so get it out. IF it even runs it would sound like a diesel ready to blow a rod.
Keep us posted on this one!! |

It might sound like a cummins diesel for a while then once the rings and lands are destroyed it will have no compression and won't run

You'd be suprised
You'd be suprised as to how a motor will run with no compression. They just don't make alot of power and smoke like a mosquito abatement machine.
