rolleyes2 Little Hi-Po Tranny help fellas!

Need some advice on band adjustments. 727 with shift kit installed (done by previous owner, several years ago...)

The shift kit is noticeable and does a pretty good job. I'd personally like to 'tighten' it up a little more, possibly lengthen-out, or delay the shifts a few hundred RPM and make it a lil' more snappy.

Running B&M trick-shift in it now.

For a 1 ton Dually, it'll SMOKE the tires in first gear and occassionaly I'll get a chirp out of 2nd gear.

All ears open....(and I suppose I can browse through my Chilton for basic band adjustments, but that's not Hi-Performance)

The Chiltons adjustments are fine for what you have. You can turn up the line pressure when you drop the pan. I believe it is counter clockwise to increase the pressure. Theres also the rod adjustment to play with. (Rod from carb to trans.)

What kind of "shift kit"?

The shift points can be adjusted by lengthening or shortening the throttle pressure linkage, lengthening the top rod will cause it to shift later for any given throttle setting.

serious? I thought it had to do with the governor in the back.

I put a bolt and nut on the throttle rod( slotted end where it hooks to the carb) to shorten the rod up......before when i had it floored, would shift about 2100 rpms.....now shifts about 3400....could take it up higher but thats where i like it............unorthidoxed......but a quick fix

Seen that, done that too. I always thought it was for the kickdown pressure/timing. Learn something every day...

When you apply throttle presure, ie giving it gas with da foot, the rod moves backwards increaseing the pressure. You can take this to far. It's not a shift kit measure, but you can adjust where it shifts this way. (RPM point.)

Do what Volarewagon78 did. I type this alot. It will work for 2bbl. to 4bbl conversions.
Below I attached a few shots where I use a bolt and nylon lock nut with a couple of washers. It's not a perfect line up. But I know this works and costs maybe a 2 dollors at an expensive store as compared to a few hundered dollors at Year One for repro OE 4bbl linkage. Your choice.

The line pressure can be tweaked when you take the pan down. Counterclockwise for increasing the pressure *I THINK* But that also changes RPM shift point. Not a great thing with anything less than 3.90's. really.
Moving the linkage rod, carb to trans, on 2bbl. set ups is done at the trans lever. Theres a block with a bolt for interfearance fit. A little movement goes a long way. Measure where you are before you move it and take note of RPM shift point. Now you have a base to adjust from and return in need be.

It's been awhile since I messed around with an automatic trans.
And not to hi-jack, but I have a 904 deep pan and no extention. Can I use a 727 filter extention on a 904?

Thumbs up

That's why I love this site.....the advice (and experience) just keeps rolling in!

I like the simple nut on the kick-down lever...I will give that a try and fiddle with it a bit. The tranny pan is due for a dropin' soon. I have never dropped the pan since I aquired the truck in, oh let's see, 2002!?!? I have a drain plug and have drained it before...suppose I oughta' change the filter too.

Anyhow, the Right Bank head gasket blew last Wednesday, so I'll be tacklin' that first (Edelbrock is alread off...headers and all to come off tomorrow after work.) Should be running again by this Sunday, so then I can try to fuss with that linkage.

I also read in the OEM (Chilton) that the band adjustment is torqued to 72in lbs. and the backed-off 2 1/2 turns. I'll do that too whilst I'm under it in the greasy spot! ()Squirt! Squirt!()

I'll follow up more later next week if I get the heads on this weekend.
Thanks again fellas! Mopar to ya!

Ron
