Default Trans swap........

Thinking of a swap from 727 to maybe a 518 or something. I've looked at my floor hump and it looks like a go (80 Dodge 100). My question is about the length and best trans to look for for this swap. I now have 3.90 gears which are great on the street but highway sucks. Is there an o/d trans that will fit without having a new drive shaft built? Are the truck and van trans the same size? Am I correct that I need to look for a 88 thru 94 trans?
I placed this here instead of the truck forum because I'm trying to keep the performance I now have but gain more top speed.

Thanks.

The A518 is your only choice. The A500 wont hold up. The o.d. unit on both of them is the weak link too. IT wont hold up to towing or anything rough. That's why the owners manual tells you not to tow in o.d. Only other choice is a 4 spd o.d. unit, but I supose you don't want to go to a manual.

Of course there's another choice. Gear Vendors makes an overdrive that replaces the existing tailshaft on a Torqueflite. It's expensive, but can handle 1200 HP stock, and can be built to take 2000 if you need it too. No weak link there!

GV, OD? Ha ha ha ha. Well, if I had the cash, I wouldn't be doiong cars on the cheap. There a bunch of dough and probably worth ever cent in the long run. But I can't.
I think Eholster has one in his car.

Tarrbabe, I think you'll be needing a hammer, probably the BFH kind to make a small clearance area.
I wish I could coment on the 500. being strong enuff.
It just seems weird that a 904 can take it but other suggest a 500 can't. Being the only real difference is the addition of the O.D unit on the tail.
DW is right, the O.D. unit is the weak link.
There *I think* 4 inchs longer than non-OD trannys.
As of now, no one I know of makes a bolt in unit that will retain the driveshaft. For about %100, you can get a new one. (Driveshaft)
The truck and the vans have the same tranny size for what ever trans may be there. 518-500.
The earlier the better. I forget what year stops the button activated and de-actavated..$R%^*RIY spelling! er, nevermind....You get it.
Anyways, 2.69's for the final drive sounds real nice.....

Why? If I read that right he's got an '80 D100 pick up. ANd he could use the drive shaft from the donor truck the tranny comes from and it's a directbolt up.

I did not buy one, but I did install one for a customer one time. It went in a 89,90, or 91 ferd f350 with the 7.2 diesel with an auto tranny. HAd to cut the rear drive shaft. Noticed very liitle difference after it was installed on the test run. It worked was all I can say, but I was not impressed with it nor did I like the little switch box that mounts on the turn signal switch.

I've bought two. In many cases there isn't a lot of money difference between the 518 swap and the GV.

Over $2000 for a gv and $200 or so for a used A518 and antoher $20 for the drive shaft from the salvage yard, hows that cost the same?? Even with a rebuild your only looking at another $500 and that's still under a $1000.

I knew you missed, but on a Duster your going to need more than a BFH to get it in there. More like a sparkle wrench... lol!!

Default cost

JK, putting a 518 into my 65 a-body might end up being about the same kind of cost, but i think DWC is right about the truck thing being cheaper than the $2K BUT its not '6-speed' like a GV is supposed to be, not that i've ever seen one in person, but its what i've read on their site.
