Default 413

A while back a guy offered me a complete '65 413 New Yorker engine which was a 345 hp engine and 516 heads with 34000 miles for 800 bucks. I have a question, although I dont know if he has the engine now and it would have been a steal, how are the 516 heads for making power among the rest of the Mopar big block heads? Do they respond well to port and bowl work? Also, is there a chance he made a mistake? I thought the 516 heads were for 361 and 383s in the early and mid 60s.

Hey pistol grip What up?
Man those heads are junk.they are an early closed chambered head design, with small valves. The money youd have to spend to make them usable would get you a great set of 906`s or 452`s ready to roll.i dont use anything before the 67-915 hi-po heads.
The 413`s are okay but around here you can still find 440`s for alot less money and better to build for the street. later babe, doug

LOL, what a dumb reply.

Closed chamber heads are junk............................
Small valves are junk........................
If one has ever driven a hi po 413, they will tell you they run real nice, despite the mall valved "junk" closed chamber heads. Flow, and valve size isn't everything. That 413 is a great motor, don't discount it because it isnt a open chamber 440.

I would have tak'en the stuff and sold the heads to recoup if I had to purchase the heads as part of the deal. Used the money to roll over into a set of Edelbrocks.
IMO you missed out. So long as the engine was good.

Well, I do appreciate his response. I like closed chamber heads better because thats what I think is better, and actually, I will probably have and early 60s Mopar that most will think is ugly as sin(I love the way they look) but will blow away unsuspecting ricers and guys who think their Mustang GT is fast all day long set up like a Ramcharger, not a clone, just setup similarly because I love that look. Something I would drive everyday (maybe im a little crazy) and then will go to the strip and shread off high 11s or low 12s all day long with good tires once I get used to the 4 speed and get it shifting like an automatic. I would, of course, want a 413 under the hood and would dish out the money for the crossram intake. I would, probably, junk those heads though unless they are similar to the 915s, which are my favorite heads. I like the use of reverse domes which, to run around 10.5 to 1 CR like I want, will need some closed chambered heads. I would have the valves oversized (2.14 intake) and have them ported fully, then, if I had the money, unshroud those valves. Thats one thing that I think alot of performance is hindered by on stock heads. BTW, what are the specs on those heads? I think I can still get the engine, the guy is an engine builder and had a few things. He said it was complete, I dont think it was running but like I said, it had low miles and im a mechanics guy, not a body guy, and my dad can get pretty much anything thats not fuel injected to run, no matter what. When he craked the frame on his '72 Chevelle he went to buy another '72 to put his 327 Vette engine in and he got the 307 in the car to run and my mom drove it and it ran for about 10 more years, then he went to buy a '68 and brought it home and got it to run too and almost went to buy another but my mom was like what are you going to do with all of these cars? So he took that out and put in the Vette engine. Anyway, like I said, I would want it to be quick but if I could get that engine and have the car running and driving so that I could use it I could save for rebuilding the engine and, since I will be driving next summer, it would be next winter or the summer after next when I could completely rebuild it and in the mean time, it could probably still pull 13s or low 14s with 4.10s. Ok now im just rambling on, im gonna see if he still has the engine.

hey ! just reading this argument, those closed chamber is NOT designed for the high end hosepower, but these heads were designed to produce low-end torque, which you need to move those gun boat.

so these heads are NOT junk, the key is pick right cam and rear end.

these heads amaze you when you combined with cross ram intake with tuned carbs. once they set up right, it is scarely even today
