Default Tranny Vendor

Hey all.
After playing around with several junker trannies and having a lot of problems I'm looking into buying a more performance built one. I am however on a budget (I start school in a couple weeks, yay tuition!). I was looking at TCI Sizzlers and was just wondering where the best place to buy them probably is. Summit has them for less then TCI lists them for and the shipping isn't too horrible, but just making sure I'm not missing a better deal due to ignorance.

Summits the best place and price to get therm at. It's all I ever use when it comes to a performance trans. No one better out there right now. Summit has a good warranty and return policy too not that you will need it. YOu might want to step up to a street fighter if you need more performance though. There so good I usually keep an extra one around so it's there when I start up a new project.

Uggh.... not true.

I personally like BTE, but will not say they are the best. I have never ran every tranney maker, back to back, on a tranney dyno. In exact same conditions, under the exact same load to say which tranney out there is without a doubt the best. I personally like BTE product and their service. Besids... BTE is Bill Taylor Enterprises.... YEAH the same Bill Taylor that started TCI

What transmission, and what problems?
You can build your own trans if you know what your doing.

Yes DWC it is, but I have been running their items for over 5 years now, and have just been given the opportunity to be sponsored by them. I have had MANY sponsor offers in which I turned down because I didnt believe in their product. Well actually most all products are about the same, its usually their service which turns me away.

I had never rebuilt one before but, I got a rebuild book, a good overhaul kit and a Transgo TF-2 shift kit took my time and did it myself. I got most of the parts from Coan Racing and I would bet it is as good as any TCI and it cost me about half the price of a TCI.

Got data to back up that claim? What, specifically makes TCI "the best"? Don't be afraid to get real technical.

If the parts came from Coan, you can bet it's better than anything from TCI.

Just messin with ya. I know how sponsors are too. Ever get one that thinks a couple hundred bucks bought them the whole damned team, car and every tool you own and think they can make all your descions for you?? Those are real gems for sure.

TCI's are OK, I am sure. I have never ran one though, I have always got lucky (Special emphasis on LUCKY) building my own with kits and the manual. coan parts are great, I tend to stay away from the transtar kits, LOL..................(fine for the old lady, or dwc, I guess, but if you have some HP in front of it...)
I did have a TCI converter in my Duster, best working one out of three.

For that reason I wont allow anyone to be a sponsor for 200 bucks. The effort I put out, to be there a few times with the car, promote their business in good faith isnt worth the hassle that could ensue.

Now for the 50K sponsors...they can do anything they want with my stuff.

Anyone ever deal with these Performance Automotive and Transmission guys?
http://www.transmissioncenter.net/dodge.htm

They advertise some really nice stuff, but pricy.

What you built is likely just as good as the TCI Sizzler or Streetfighter.

If you ever get to see a TCI disassembled you'll realize that there is absolutely nothing remarkable about them; about as far from "the best" as you'll ever see.

John, you don't understand. Even though B&M and TCI both buy their soft parts from exactly the same manufacturers, there is a process that occurs as soon as the shipments land on the docks of the respective companies. All the parts shipped to B&M immediately turn into junk, and the parts shipped to TCI become the best in the world. It's magic.

For what it is worth. I`m running a TCI in the Dart. For the price, I`m very satisfied. I beat it every once in a while. It has about 2500 miles on it with no issues at this point. Still runs cool and crisp. If you`re looking for something cheap, for a driver that you`re not going to beat the hell out of. You should be OK with the TCI.

Well, I guess since I never have had trouble with my builds...................

My builds are the best there is at this time.

LIke I said before, never use a transtar kit, I built one with a transtar kit, and the clutches lasted 12,000 miles, I rebuilt it with a pieced together kit from the local tranny guy, and it still works great. (82 D300 12' flat bed with a nice 360)
However, when I do rebuild the 727 in my dually, I will be picking your guys brains for who to get parts from, and what is the best. TCI will not even be in the running.

They are certainly not cheap in parts or price. I can get a local rebuild much cheaper with decent parts. And you can beat the hell out of them if you like .I know mine sure gets the hell beat out of them on a regualar bassis. Have not replaced one yet either. Hope I don't have to either.

That's too bad. Your missing out on a great parts source even if you want to build your own.

Considering what is available in the market, $599.00 for a TCI Sizzler is cheap. don`t mean cheap as in quality, I mean money spent.

Here's where I have to disagree, if you look at the clutches in a Transtar kit you'll see Borg-Warner and Raybestos; check the numbers inked on the discs and you'll se that they're the same stuff used in almost every brand kit.

There are lots of reasons for component failure, I wouldn't blame the quality of the component without substantial proof.

No matter what brand the kit is you can bet that the majority of the components inside are made by vendors other than the kit maker; a close look at the sealed plastic bags within the kit will show a plethora of brands and they will often change from one kit to the next even with the same part number.

These clutches were not BW, or raybestos, they were made in China. However, the parts the warehouse pulled to make me a kit, were BW.
LIke you said, whatever was there at teh time, huh?
