Default 440 Oil pump change..

Got a buddy with a 440 in his charger.. he just got it about a week ago and he's not happy with the oil pressure..

at idle (850 or so) he's only getting 10psi and its maxing at like 20-25psi when he goes through the gears...

so its planned for next weekend that were gonna do this, and although it *LOOKS* easy enough, is there any surprises to expect? also is there a recommended pump out there..

his 440 is mild... dont know exact specs but 9.5:1 compression, mild cam, minor port work on indy cast heads... running a 6pack setup..

dont know what other specs you need to determine pump...

Thanks

JOe

Two stock type pumps, std and deep rotor (high volume), std pump should be sufficient unless engine is loose, pressure is controlled by spring (also removable from outside), black one should give around 60 psi max.

It's the bypass spring, sits under the screw in plug at the rear of the pump. (points right at the motor mount) The black (hemi) spring is heavier than the stock one so that more pressure is required to get the pump to bypass.

Increasing the spring pressure won't raise the warm oil pressure, the low pressure is due to lack of volume for whatever reason.

Assuming that the present pump isn't just worn out, a high volume pump is what's needed to raise the OP.

The pump can be changed from the outside but the long bolt will often hit the K-member, preventing it from coming out of the pump body. Just leave the long bolt in the pump when removing it and install it in the pump before reinstallation.
