They'll take over 400 HP. A new sure grip carrier and bearings will do.
What are you trying to do? |

thanks for the reply i have a 71 demon 340 with about 400 or so hp from what people tell me on here the list of parts is under the thread how much power i have a 8 3/4 with 3.23 suregrip in the car right now but i would like to take it to the local 1/8 mile some but i didnt want to take the chance on hurting the 8 3/4 and it has the small bolt pattern and to high of a gear so i thought if i could beef up a 8 1/4 since i already have one and just put that in it and put on some slicks on it since its got the big bolt pattern and easy to find wheels for i would try that and just switch the rear end to race but im olny 17 and jobless so i dont have much money to spend the car also has a 727 with arond 3000 stall and a manual valve body with shift kit and hemi clutches and bands

The 8 1/4 will hold up to the power you have with ease. We have run them on dirt with more than 400 and they hold up fine and dirt puts more abuse on the axle than your drag strip stuff. You'ld be much better off just getting a used Sure Grip from a swap meet and installing that in your 3/4 and save a lot fo work.

the 8 3/4 does have the sure grip but the bigest problem with using it is i use this car on the street right now but i thought if i liked racing i would use it as a street strip car but i cant afford gas the way it is now and with 4 sumtin gears in the rear i dont think it would get much use on the street any more and i really enjoy driving it and plus ive had a hard time finding many wheels with the 5x4 bolt pattern to run slicks on

All you have to do is get a machine shop to redrill the axles to 5on4.5. It's easy. And with the 3/4 just get a 2.76 to run on the street and a 4.10 on the track. Easier to swap center sections in the 3/4.

I love the 8 3/4.............
Use to run one in my Volare. I had 2.76 pumpkin, a 3.23, a 4.30 and a 4.89. Quick swap and makes a different animal with each one.
