there is a one page artical in the august 2000 issue of "truck trend" magazine. is it a truck or a car? the artical says its a truck according to government. the artical is neutrally written and has a picture of a inferno red cruiser.

Wow ! That shows what our government knows about cars ! This is NOT a truck. It's built on a Neon platform for cryin' out loud. I guess they've never seen a streetrod either. If they had, they would recognise it in the PT Cruiser. The first time I saw it in the truck mags I was scratching my head too....... W.T.F. ? "a car in a truck mag ?
Well, ya can't blame them for wanting to get in on the action too. I just cant wait to see what all the aftermarket comes up with. But oh please mr bigtime aftermarket designer, go to some rod runs before you start drawing. That Bruisers nice, but it looks like a friggin G RIDE to me !

According to what I've read, the government did not decide it was a truck, Chrysler did.
It was in an effort to better their truck MPG averages. Which is something our over-bearing government rates them on. By moving the PT into that category, it helps dilute the V10 MPG numbers a little. At the moment I can't remember where I read the article but I am fairly certain that is was Chrysler's idea.

Crisco2, it looks like we both will have to take winter vacations by the time our PT arrives. Since you live in Fla, we vote to come your way since it gets realllly cold here in Jan & Feb. Hope we both see the cars before Christmas.

For crying out loud, It is NOT built on a neon platform. It only shares front suspension attachment points and a few fastners. rear Susp. is all PT, body underside is diff, beefed up etc., diff. wheelbase, weighs about 600 pounds more. 2.4L eng., diff. trans. Check it out.
