Post Cerwin Vega Subwoofers?.........

I have a set of Cerwin Vega 12" XL-series subwoofers 4 Ohm with a single voice coil. I have not seen another set like these anywhere. I know that they have been discontinued for a while now but I am not sure why. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what they are worth and how dependable they are. Also why were they discontinued. They can handle power ratings from 60 watts RMS to 250 watts RMS per speaker. Do I have a good set of subs or a good set of crap?

I used to sell those, but not that many.I never had any real problems with them either.

I don't know why they don't make then anymore.Cerwin-Vega has introduced several new lines since they were discontinued. The new lines have higher power handling and new/better look.

Thanks for the info. I was just wondering what I had. I do have a correction, I have seen another set, I just remembered. They are two 8s or two 10s of the XL-series in an audio shop for sale still new, I think. I don't remember for how much. They were too small for me. I have not been there in a couple of years. He may still have them. He has had them for a while and couldn't sell them. As far as my 12" XLs I have not installed any polly fill in the box, or what ever they call it today. Some people say it will make them sound better and some people say I don't need it.

Default Polyfil

Is your box ported or sealed?

Polyfil can make a difference in some boxes if it's used correctly.

1/2" soft foam could help glued to the inside of the box on the opposite side of the sub,but not behind the port.

Thanks again for all the info. I personally like sealed enclosures. They seem to have more bass. It just seems that these subs don't sound like they should. Of course it could be the crappie receiver. Maybe that is why they are required to have the foam.

I used to have two of those in a 2.0 cubic inch ported box (per sub) with 130 watts RMS to each sub in my '91 Sundance and it pounded the crap out of that car!

Mine are in a 2.2 cubic inch ported box (per sub) with about 200 watts RMS to each sub in my 87 Dodge Daytona. But I have heard alot better subs that are smaller. Maybe it is the type of amp that I am using. They just don't sound right. Did you have the foam in yours, or what ever they call it? It pounds good but not like it should. It could be better.

I did not have foam in mine. Your box could be a little to big. Another reason for the subs not pounded as much as they could is that maybe your port isn't tuned correctly (diameter and length). Also, make sure you wired the subs correctly. Make sure they are in phase. When I first hooked mine up, they didn't pound all that hard. I discovered that I hooked up one of the subs wrong and they were out of phase. I corrected the hook up problem and holy hell did they start to pound!

What amp are you using to power them? I was using an Earthquake Annihilator HA-400.
