I've got a really strange problem with a new changer and was told to look for Coop964x4's help in here. Of course, if anyone else can help, please chime in.
I installed a mopar changer in my 2001 Dakota yesterday (P/N 82202700) and the 15-ft cable (P/N 822300930). I've left the rear seat out of the Quad and the cable's still plugged in at the head unit. When I connect the changer at the rear, the
dash chimes, my check engine and check gauges lights come on, my odometer flashes 'No buS' and all the gauges go dead. The changer also makes some funky
noises. When I disconnect the changer the dash chimes and the gauges go back
to normal. I've replaced both the cable and changer today and the same
gremlins persist. My dealer is totally worthless and doesn't know what to do.
One service writer said that he had seen it before in other cars and that the
body computer was dead, but that I'd have to see the elctrician on Monday.
Someone give me some options here, please.

Is that the factory radio you have in there? If so, on most factory radios, if you add a changer or even an amp off the factory radio, the radio was known to act weird and send your computer a signal thinking wires are crossed. If you have the origional radio, the changer wont work. You will have to get a new head unit. I have seen this problem before and a new head unit(cd player: Sony, Alpine, etc.) the problem stopped. Now if it still occurs, your wiring in the dash is backwards. Also!!! Make sure your radio has a good ground.

New head unit my ass! It's the factory head unit and has built-in changer controls. The changer and wiring harness are all Mopar. If it doesn't work, I'll send it back and do something else, but Chrysler's gonna have to put up a fight before they tell me it won't work. Thanks for the feedback, though.

It was at the dealer at 7am Monday and they have no idea what's up. I went to www.dcanswers.com and had an engineer check up with the electrician at the dealer. I think I've found the problem though. This is from this dealer

P/N 82202700 uses CCD Protocol (Older square radios, I believe)
P/N 82203465 uses J1850 Protocol (Flush-mount or rounded-corner radios)

The Mopar accessories catalog does not list the second changer, but it seems that it's the appropriate one for the 2001s, with a different communication protocol. This sounds like my fix. I've just got to get the truck from the dealer without paying a diagnostic fee, if possible.
