new stereo and speakers, do i have enough power?
I have a '66 dart, since i havent gotten my hands on a factory service manual yet i have no idea what my alternator output is.
i have 4 6x9s that i want to put in, for now that is. 3 will go in the rear (as there are already mounting points in the rear for 3 6x9s) and one will go in the front where the original speaker was. I am new to electrical with cars, i can hook it all up myself no problem, the only thing i am wondering about is the fact that some people have told me i wont have enough juice to power everything. My '66 Dart is powered by a 225ci slant six btw. anyhow is an amp out of the question? even if it is a small one? also where should i put the amp? i know they need to be in a location where they can get some air (not flowing really just room to breathe). Should i mount it in the trunk? under the passenger part of the bench seat? any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. thank you. Caesar |

Either of the locations for an amp is good. Just ask yourself, do ya want to show it off or keep it out of the way? Not sure about the power drain but ya could always buy a capacitor (the store juice for a system and take the drain off the battery). A .5 farad would be plenty. Watch how you wire the front speaker and the 3rd rear speaker unless you have a center channel. Songs that have a left to right fade or front to rear fade will play games with your head. It will drive you crazy
Oh, and if your rear deck is metal like it was in my '73 Swinger you'll need to dynamat the heck out of it, with 2 6x9's it rattles like a mutha and sounds like crap. Adrian |

hey yo adrian, thanks a bunch. You helped me out a great deal. Turns out I am not going to install my stereo system for about 6 months. So I will be able to research amps, alternator output figures and the like. ALso plan out how I am going to wire the whole thing together.
I have to put the 6x 9s in the back, there are 3 perfect spots for them and the one up front. I might put 2 5's up front by the floorboards. Any advice how to wire all these together to avoid the "head games" you spoke of? and if not anyone that does know? Caesar, thanks again. |

Speaker Fun
I installed a 600w 4ch amplifier in my 66 coronet which probably has the same charging system as your dart and I have no problems. Are you sure the center dash speaker will hold a 6x9? I thought that's what mine was but when I pulled it out it was a 4x10. In terms of installation it is best to mount the amp in the trunk, plenty of air and short runs to the speakers(easier wiring). If you want to create a center channel it would be easiest to get a 4 ch amp run the left and right off of ch's 1 and 2, then mono bridge 3 and 4 and feed that to both the front and rear center speakers. Just make sure that your amplifier is stable at that ohm load. Remember if you hook up two 8 ohm speakers parellel the ohm load drops to about 4 ohms, if you hook them up in series it raises the ohm load to 16 so you'll have to tweak the gain structure a little to balance them out.

more than likely if you bought automotive speakers they are 4 ohm rated which means they will run 2ohm parrallel or 8 ohm in series.
