The only way to be sure will be to have it sonic checked. Theoreticaly the 71-73 blocks were thicker than the later ones but core shift will determine if the one you have would be safe or not.

Default Block Thickness

We blew up a .030 over 360 that was a 79 block. Only went .030 because we heard the walls were thinner. Dropped a valve head in a set of EQ's and destroyed one cylinder and even cracked outside of block. Snapped the rod in 2 places and left a small ball of aluminum on the small rod end. never hurt anything else but block, rod and piston. head is salvageable and doesn't leak. Haven't had crank magnafluxed and checked for straightness yet. Working on car and new avenger body. But I digress. anyway when i got all the pieces out of the pan and cleaned, all the cylinder wall pieces were at least .120 thk and most were about .150. So I would guess that block had no core shift. but to be sure i would have it sonic checked to go .060. Any machine shop should be able to do it if they work on racing engines. not that expensive if you want to try .060 pistons.
