Question Typical Oiling Modifications

I need help again. At the track this Saturday, I only was turning my stock 318 about 5200 rpm, but when I came in and checked the engine compartment, there was oil all over the top of the engine. It seemed to be coming from the dip stick tube. We ducktaped that sucker, but oil was still coming out on the next hot lap session. It created some oil smoke when I would bring the car back to the pits, but during the race I didn't notice it. The left valve cover is vented with two K&N breathers, I thought that would be enough crankcase ventilation.
Does anyone else have the same problem? Can anyone help?

Wink venting

I had the same problem, we now have two 5/8" hoses on the LEFT valve cover that are connected to check valves screwed into a pipe fitting that is welded just past the collector part of the exhaust header. One hose goes to the left header and the second hose to the right header. The check valve insures no back fire returning to the valve cover area. The exhaust vents the cover harmlessly to the muffler area. Our vents are made up of thin wall 1 1/2" tubing about 3" long, a breather cap with outlet is attached and hose hooked to it. The tube has a homemade circular one piece spiral staircase placed inside to further restrict any oil from escaping . We use a dipstick in the pan only, screw-in type, and plug the regular stick hole. Hope this helps. Harry

Smile Blowing Oil Solved

Way to go, Harry! I new one of the Mopar racers would solve my problem. Thanks a lot. Better than trial and error, anyday. Where do you get the oil pans with the screw in dip stick? Do you make them yourself? I hate to ask dumb questions but I'm not a young man and time is running out. I got to speed up the learning curve. By the way, the 318 runs OK, but instead of rebuilding it over the Winter, I think it would be better to invest the rebuild money in a 340 or 360. The only difference in the 340/360 is you have to change one of the motor mounts to make it fit, but other than that it is an easy change. Right? Any thoughts. Please help!

Default use that mount too

just add a couple washers to the driver side mount on the block, and use the same mount, it works

Cool

We use a MILODIAN oil pan, came with side oil drain hole and a plug mounted on the top drivers side section of the pan. I removed the plug and welded a piece of dipstick on,filled with oil, less 1 qt., and made my marks 1 qt. down , and then added the last qt.and made a full mark. Not perfect , but dose the job. Harry

Thumbs up Big Help

Many thanks guys. You can bet I'll be busy getting the engine and the car ready for 2002. You know it is the little things that make a difference. I am going to watch for Sanborn's small block prep. too.

Default

I am about 1/3 finished on the block prep. Been tied up on some other race parts for another engine. Will get back to it soon.
