Default block material

Are all the 71-74 360 blocks high nickle?? Or is it the 71-72 that are the really tough blocks? Also how do 587 heads compare with the J heads?

Someone else may know the right answer, but I thought the only high nickel blocks were the 340 TA blocks. The 71-74 360 blocks only had thicker cylinder wall because they were cast using the 340 casting molds

All I know is when my machinist bored our 71 block he said it was hard. At least a lot harder than the chevy blocks he normally bores.

Wink Machinist's Dream Engine

My machinist has stated several times that if he could have it his way he would use Mopar materials, Ford machining and GM design for a killer engine. I am with him up to the GM design part.

I am not sure that the block material is so much different then as now. I think the castings back in 70-74 were thicker and that is the main difference.

for interests sake, not that it helps you in your case, but i heard that all pre 1962 blocks used high nickel content, until the price of it went up after that. maybe it was used again in later years? or perhaps just for the "better" engines.
