Default Deisel mods !!!

Im ready to put some patrs on my 05 cummins six speed ram. Ive been told not to wast time with full exhaust(turbo back) untill ive really gotten into things that just removing the factory muffler is worth a few extra hp. I already have the banks cold air kit and am happy with it when is there a need for aux, or aftermarket lift pumps, injectors and that sort of thing? Im not looking for 800hp.

I like the TST boxes best. The owner is a retired Cummins engineer and knows these motors.

Maybe we need to get together, since we are in the same town!

The stock exhaust is good to maybe 4-500 HP
And of course there is several reasons to get a Smarty.

Default First things first

Do not put any mods into the engine untill you protect it. That means an exhaust gas temperature monitor gauge. More fuel means more heat. Then put on a four inch exhaust system, from turbo housing to tail pipe. Next, add a fuel pressure gauge. Low fuel pressure kills injector pumps very quickly.
Now you are ready for a box which controls fueling, timing and boost. Pick the one with the best acceptance and reputation. TST, Diablo or Edge are all good units. Stay away from Banks power adders.

Go to the truck sites and read up. Dollar for HP Banks is very costly. And they keep telling buyers that thier products don't effect the warantee!!!!
There was a story of a guy who melted down his Cummins with a Banks kit and it took a year to get his truck going. Are you going to risk that? The 'box' he used had protection for overheating the exhaust but it didn't do that. And, it was Banks dealer installed.

Default Exactly!

Banks has likely the worst reputation for diesel power adders in the business. They started early and taught all the late comers how not to do it! The horror stories go on and on.

Default Cummins

No Mopar parts for cummins modification. Stick with the above mentioned sources, and you'll be running waht most guys use. Check out genosgarage.com for virtually all of the things we suggested, but also for the correct and better priced maintenance items like fuel and oil filters, air filters, brake parts etc.
Please heed the warning to start with gauging, to protect your engine. Remember, diesels heat up with more fuel, cool with less, just opposite of gassers. With a EGT probe mounted pre-turbo, you want to stay below 1300 degrees EGT constant.

Default egt

Sounds good, the first thing ill do is get a set of gauges. Do you always mount the temp sensor before turbo?

The EGT goes on the exhaust manifold. Normally, you would install it in the middle of the manifold or right over where it dumps to the turbo.

My Edge Juice w/Attitude came with the EGT and the instructions showed the exact location to place it.

You should modify the way you spell Diesel, Ruldolph wouldn't be happy.

Default Probe

For the egt gauge goes in front of the turbine, that is, as Ed said, on the maniflod at the collector that the turbine attaches to. Be sure to remove the turbine before drilling for the probe. Iron chips eat turbine wheels.
Mounting the probe downstream of the turbine gives a 200-300 degree lower erroneous reading.

Wish i had used spell check, as my dad used to say "thats why they call it dope" Anyway thanks for the help! It seems all egt's should be read before the turbo,or at least thats how the kits come. In the kit i found that i liked the best came with boost, egt, and pyrometer. I thought egt and pyro. where the same thing, i would have thought fuel pressure egt and boost.

AutoMeter claims that they are the same, well kind of. They show the EGT as the sensor and the pyrometer as the gauge.

i hope you do not live in California. this fine state now smogs diesels . the power adders and tuners are illegal unless they have an c.a.r.d. exemption label.

First, if you look in the top right corner of every post, you will see some information. He states that he lives in Chatham, IL.

Second, I think that you meant C.A.R.B. not c.a.r.d.
