Default 03 Cummins diesel starting problems

My 03 Ram 3500 has now developed a starting problem only when motor is fully warmed. Let cool down and starts immediately. It is not over heated. It appears to be some sort of injector or temp sensor. It's as if it is not getting fuel. (No smell no sputtering.)

Anyone experience or have idea? Please feel free to think out loud.

Thank You!

Default Are you?

Monitoring fuel pressure? It sounds like your lift pump has gone south, and your injector pump has been damaged. Early signs of this are dead pedal after hot start. No start could be another symptom.
Low fuel supply pressure causes this damage. It must be monitored. If you take it to a good diesel dealer, they should be able to diagnose. If it is the lift pump, don't waste your money on a stock replacement. There are good replacements out there. I run a Raptor pump, after the same issue hurt my IP under warranty.

Since it's temperature related it could be the fuel shutdown solenoid.

Thinking out loud.

Its most likely the lift pump, but try running a bottle of diesel conditioner through the tank.

If I do not put conditioner in every third tank I also experince the same problem. The two problems might be unrelated, but for $6 bucks hey.

I do have a Fas Lift Pump and fuel pressure gauge, so I know I am getting pressure.

Let me know how you make out.

Well I don't work on cummins, but if it was a Duramax it'd need fuel injectors. They leak. What happens is that when it's cold the fuel is thick enough for it to build enough pressure to start. But when it gets hot the fuel thins out and there is just too much leakage to build any pressure.

Just taking a quick peek at Napafix. There are alot of injectors being replaced for no start Cummins too.

03 has the CRD 24 valve....need to take it and have the fuel system tested on it.. Could be looking at injectors or HP pump...sad to say mostly likely is the injectors as Ive seen this a few times, they start fine cold wont hot or they long crank like there is no fuel in the system...usually the Lift Pumps on those when they die, they are dead, they wont pull through like the older 24 valves that used the Carter style electric pump. However if it still has the original lift pump mounted to the filter housing I do rec. (to all my customers who havent yet,) to swap it out for the in-tank kit.
