Is it worth saving??
Came across this at the local scrap yard while searching for RC parts

Been through a fire, everything on the outside is pretty much shot. I grabbed onto the clutch and I could move it a little so I don't think its seized. Although, I tipped it over and a bunch of water poured out. Oil pan is bashed in pretty good. The yard wants $300 - $500 for it. They seemed mainly concerned about the flywheel so I might be able to get it for cheaper without it. I'm just kind of concerned with the intense heat this thing went through. I suppose its possible to change the properties of the metal with those kind of temps. Could be a reliability issue down the road. So what do you think? Should I pick it up or walk away? |

Whew!
I'd run from that one. The intense heat has melted one of the rocker covers. This means that the turbine is likely toast. Valve train could be warped, and with the pan bashed, some possible damage to the crank/rods/bearings is likely. The block might be OK, but that is not much of a contributor to the cost of all the other stuff needed. Too bad.

Core
I haven't looked lately at the core value on one of those engines. At one time they were over $3,000. That may have changed and I would think that the salvage guy would know that. But it might be worth checking into. They may dock you for the damaged parts however, so it may not prove to be worth anything. Just an idea to maybe make you some money.

I'm just going to assume everthing on the outside of the motor is junk.
Turbo's full of dirt, top of the IP is melted off. I was mainly just interested in the block and head. But after seeing what a new IP is worth I could probably find a whole running truck for not a whole lot more then what a pump costs. I think the pan got bashed after the fact. Possibly from getting dropped on the ground. But either way, its toast. Still pondering this one... |

Unless you need a boat anchor, don't waste your money.

Block may be OK.
Head is junk and not worth even trying to have machined flat with that amount of heat. For the money they want I would stay away from it also. |
