Gas ijn Diesel
Help! I had a brain fart and accidentally started fueling my 1999 RAM 2500 with gasoline rather than diesel! I caught it right away but got .3 gallons of gasoline into the 35 gallon tank.
My thoughts are that there is such a low concentration of gas in the diesel that there won't be a problem. Any thoughts? Regards, Steve Cass |

I've heard some people putting a gallon of gas in a almost full tank of diesel to clean injectors. But I'm not sure you can get away with 3 gallons. I've also heard some people used 1 qt of transmission fluid. I'm not sure I would take that gamble..

3/10ths of a gal is fairly small. You might consult a dealer but they might just be prone to say no to cover their hiney. It'll probably wind up separating out. I'm not sure which is heavier? I suppose the diesel. I do know a large concentration of gas is terminal! Saw it on a diesel tractor. Total rebuild.

Was it .3 (3/10) of a gallon or three gallons? If it was 3/10 I would have just filled it the rest of the was w/ diesel I don't think you would have harmed it at all. Three gallons is a different story.

I wouldn't worry about that little bit. You'd be suprized how many Duramax owners have filled their diesel's right to the top with gasoline (one even used premium LOL). I syphon out as much as I can get then fill it with diesel. And they are on their way. (I change the fuel filter too). But I'm sure there is more than 0.3 gallons left in the tank when I can't get any more.
I sure like it though when people do that. I take that 40+ gallons home and run it in my Sundance 5 gallons at a time to a full tank. 40 gallons at $3+/gallon that's $120 minimum fuel savings for me! |

Thanks to all for the replies. I consulted a certified diesel mechanic online. He say the 3/10 gallon in a full tank should not be a problem. He said the biggest problem is that the small amount of gasoline reduces the lubrication and that I could add a fuel additive or 1/2 quart of motor oil if I wanted. I always add Stanadyne Lubricity Formula to the diesel anyway and he said that should be sufficient.
I ran it in to work this morning and acturaly the engine seems to be running smoother than normal! I plan to top off the tank on the way home this afternoon to further dilute the mix. Regards, Steve Cass |

well i use to kno a guy that had a trucking company and he swore he ran a little gasoline mixed in with the diesel in his gravel trucks, swore it made em run better, and gave em a lil more ass.. but i didn quiet believe him..

Another thing to watch out for...
Keep an eye on the fuel filter as the gas could, but not always, clean up any gunk that might have formed in the fuel system. With so little though I'd bet you'll be fine so long as you don't do it alot...

I knew a guy that filled his powerstroke all the way to the top twice in one year by accident of course. It still runs fine, but his brain on the other hand, thats another story lol. I'd still change the filter just for safe measure. But thats me...

When my sister did that to her Cummins, they had to have the dealer empty the tank and clean the system.
The problem was not after the petrol got in the cylinder, it was what could happen to the injection system on the way there. On another note, we accidentally filled the tank with diesel and it didn't bother the Model A at all. |

doesn't the newer diesel trucks have a safety device on it that will shut the engine down if octane is detected in the fuel system?

Ummm... Octane is not an additive. Octane is a method of measuring the combustibility of the fuel.. Just like cetane is a method of measuring combustibility.
