2011 Ram Cummings Fuel Mileage
Last year I bought a new Ram 3500 single rear axle crew cab with 8 foot box. It only had 4000 miles when I went from Wi to Pa to pickup a car trailer. On the way there I averaged 16.5 MPG. On the way back pulling a 31 foot 3 axle enclosed car trailer I only averaged 9.9 MPG. I was going between 70 and 80 MPH most of the time both ways. The truck now has 6000 miles. Is this terrible mileage normal?

What kind of mileage do you expect running 70-80 with a big trailer?

Cummins, not Cummings.

My nephew has a 2007 same truck as mine exept 7' box and shorter cab and gets 13 MPG with car in trailer. He said that the newer trucks have more emmision junk on them and that could be the problem. I am not at all happy throwing $4.00 out my window every 9.9 miles

It's not that they have more emissions stuff on them. It's the computers program. The pre and post injections are waste of fuel. The Duramax has a "hydrocarbon" injector. It's only purpose is to inject fuel into the exhaust. Pouring fuel into the exhaust to clean up the tail pipe emissions. What a waste.
There isn't a new truck out there that's going to pull that big of a trailer at 70-80 and get good fuel mileage. Driving 55 should put you in that 13-15 mpg range. |
