Bad Oil Pan
I have a 2006 Dodge 2500 4X4 5.9 HO Mega Cab. The oil pan is displaying bubbled up rust spots and is leaking. I need to replace the pan and I can't find an after market source. Does anybody know of one?
The second issue is pan removal. I have been told that it is possible to remove front engine mount bolts, exhaust connection and fan shroud so that the engine can be lifted up enough to drop the pan low enough to clear the bell housing. Has anyone done this procedure? If somebody has could you tell me what to look out fore and what procedure steps would be necessary and pics would be great. The alternative is drop the tranny and remove bell housing and flywheel. I don't really want to go this route. Dealership would want app. $2000 to do the job including the pan. Pan price is $850 retail from them. It appears that they had lousy steel for the pans as it is quite a common problem. No recall! Thanks in advance. Freddy |

Did you check to see if there might be a tsb or a recall on this? Might worth your while to check directly with Chrysler. Maybe have coffee with Sergio. Sometimes the dealer isn't the best source of info.

Would it be practical to remove the pan and repair the leak with a welded patch?

The pan is so full of rusted blemishes that I think it would be impracticable, I have considered that option when it is off thanks. Really need to talk to someone who has accessed the oil pan the way I want to do it. I believe it can be done but would like to confirm it with someone who has already been there and done it. You can believe that when I do it there will be a step by step procedure with pictures to illustrate posted. I love challenges and the ability to share those experiences with others, after all isn't that why we are here lol

You can get it off by loosening the engine mounts and raising the engine AND jacking up the truck to unload the suspension. Your gonna need an engine hoist to lift the engine. Crossmembers in the way and you'll never jack it up.

A good welding shop could probably take your pan, cut the rim off and weld you up a new pan most likely cheaper than a dealer OEM.

Thanks very much for the info, I am going to try it. When I get if off I will try and braze it up. I can take 14 gage metal and form it into patches and weld. Can't believe that nobody makes an after market pan for this beast.
