Default 92 Ram 250 cummins

I am going to look at a 1992 Ram 250 4x4 with the cummins turbo diesel and a 5 speed. It is up for tender sale. What kind of life did they get out of these powertrains? This one has about 200,000 miles on it.

I know a guy who has a similar truck (not me), who has over 300K on his. Biggest question is, was it maintained for its 200K life span? If you are confident, and have gotten a good price I wouldn't be afraid to go for it. But, mechanical repairs and parts to diesels run a little steeper than gas engines so, depending on your budget, you may want to think about that. Good luck and let us know what you decide!

The '92 will have the infamous Getrag 360 5-speed transmission. They have lots of problems and parts prices are astronomical.
The engine will likely outlast 4-5 transmissions.

Getrag parts have come down in price and have become easier to get. Check out www.standardtransmissions.com

When the tranny dies, you can put an updated NV4500 in the truck without much headache. Which, I will agree, is a much better tranny.

I just finished a NV4500 upgrade on my '92 with parts from Standard. Total cost including a new clutch was close to three grand so any potential buyer should factor that in.
I wouldn't repair/replace the Getrag at any price.

I have seen one that was traded at a local dealership here in my area that had 485,000 miles on it,,All records went with it and only normal maintence was done or needed,,It took one clutch,2 starters,2 waterpumps and a alternator,,Now normal wear and tear items were done, batteries, brakes etc, etc,,Truck was bought by a freind of mine who used it locally to plow and truck pull,,Original owner pulled horses for rodeo's all over the country and most were towing miles,,truck has now since broke a rear and it was sold to me by owner due to his money problem(lack of cash flow to fix her),,I'm going to redo her over and make her shine again,,It was bought with 550,000 miles on it(just went out into garage and looked at it),,Mild conversion for it though, freshen it up and drop a 6 spd into it,,Don't be afraid of the milage or the tranny, just look her over good and see if you can look at the maintence records,,I'd bet she'd welcome a new home.......
