Question Mileage question

OK - I presently have a Ram 1500 SC, 4.7/auto.
In a year or two I am considering buying a diesel QC 2500 for two reasons:

1) engine life
2) efficiency

I know the Cummins has LONG engine life (I worked heavy truck maintenance once upon a time- we had 5.9's with 600000 on them).
Diesels are more efficient - but do they get better mileage?

I drive 300+ miles a week, about 250 of it on the highway, 22 miles a trip. I don't have anything to pull with it, although it would probably be drafted to pull a car trailer once in a while.
Since I am meticulous about my vehicles, I figure it would last me about the same as 3 gas trucks.

It would be a 2WD QC, auto with 3.73 gears.
What kind of mileage can I expect?

Thumbs up MPG

I have a 95 Ram 3500 with 4.10 gears and a 5 speed, the truck is totaly stock with 180k miles and I get 20 - 22 MPG empty and 16 - 18 when pulling my car on the trailer...

I would advise you to get the 3.54 gears since you don't plan on pulling much, this will help a lot. From what I have read the newer trucks don't get as good MPG as the 12 valve trucks unless you do some aftermarket upgrades...

Good Luck, I think you will be very pleased!

Angry

Unfortunately the new Rams only come in 3.73 and 4.10 gear options.

And the RIG I want is $32000

A little out of my price range for the immediate future

Unless I had about $10000 to put down

I had a 94 2500 2WD with 5 speed and 3.55 that always ran 23 to 26 mpg.
01 H.O. 3500 4x4 with 6 speed and 3.55 that runs at 16 to 18 mpg.

Thumbs up

I own a 95 2500 4x4 that gets 18mpg consistantly, uphill, downhill, in town, on the highway, empty, pulling my trailer on the interstate, ect. If I have to slow down to 55 or 60 on long hauls I can get 20mpg. My diesel is the best truck I have ever owned and has 118,000 on it. The only problem I see is that after they get 100,000 miles on them the banks will not give you a loan on them for their actual value, so if you want to trade up the dealers wont give you good money as a trade. It seems that the banks don't care if it's a diesel or not when it comes to the odometer. Maybe it's just my experience.

Biggrin Mileage

We have a 99 Ram 3500 Quad-cab 4x4 5 spd. with 3.55 gears. When driven nicely we get 19-20 mpg around town and 18.5 or so on the Interstate at about 75-80 mph. I love this truck!! We had a 96 2500 with an automatic and it started having tranny trouble after 50,000 miles and it didn't get as good of mileage as the 99 or our 91 350 5 spd. with 4.10 gears. Sorry to ramble on but my point is go with a manual.

Default 03 W3500 Quadcab SRW

I just figured it out and I get 23Mpg.. But our gallons up here are slightly larger. The dealership says after I hit 6000 miles the "breakin chip" will quit working and I can expect better milage yet.

I'm running the 3.73 gears and I run with the cruise set at 120Kph( about 70 - 75 Mph).

I just got back from my first pulling road trip with my "new to me" 01 4x4 quad cab 2500 diesel. Big thing that is going to get changed soon is the 4.10 gear. Pulling my 24ft trailer I was getting 11-12 mpg. This was driving 65-75 mph and the rpms were around 2200. Dropped the speed down to 55 for about 10 miles and the overhead mpg calculations went from 10-11 up to 13-14. Obviously I need to get the rpms in a more "happy" range. I knew I wanted the 3.55 gear, but I've been looking for a good used diesel for about four years now and finally the trade in I was looking for came in last week. From the overhead calculator it looks like it was getting around 16 empty.
