Question Lock Up Converter

Is there a way to shut off the lock up converter and stay in 4th gear. I have a 99 2500 totally stock. I pull a 31 foot camper and it seems that when the converter kicks down it kills the power and effiecency. Thanks.

While it is possible to prevent converter lockup, it's not a good idea. When the converter is unlocked, the slippage generates heat, the transmission's #1 enemy. Also, when the OD is engaged the rotating planetary gears generate more heat.

The better thing to do is lockout the OD when towing and let the converter lock up. The owners manual advises this.

Forcing the lockup of the torque convertor, especially with a load, on a stock transmission can lead to short convertor life. I would not recommend it.

True when the TC is unlocked it generates heat, and true heat is one of the trannys worst enemies (I recommend a tranny temp gauge for all guys who a towing), but if done properly it is safer for the transmission to be unlocked than to be forced to stay locked.
