440, I want to build a fire breathin monster!!
just bought a 70 Callenger drag car, not street legal. 440,11;1, 915 heads, edelbrock manifold, demon 850, 727, dana 60, frame connectors, ect....
what kind of HP would you think this motor is putting out? By the way, i installed the connectors, that was fun>>>>>>>>> Oh ok the point>. I got a spare shortblock with the car, it's stock and I want to build a monster. Car turns 7.13 in the 1/8 and after I get all the MSD stuff installed I think maybe 6.99? I need input monsterwise!!!!!!!!!! |

Hard to estimate the power without knowing the weight, cam and head work. Seems it's running decently, if the weight is around 3500 it's propably making 500+ hp. If the current ignition works, you'll propably gain nothing with the MSD.
The stock block has got it's limitations, there is no sence in building much over 700 hp based on the stock block. There is a lot of different routes to choose from, first you must decide wether you want a high winding engine or a torque monster, how big do you want to make it? Next decision which also has a big effect on power is the choice of cylinder heads. |

Dart66 thaks for thee reply. I am going to use the stock block, I am shooting for 600HP so as you said should be ok. I am up for suggestions on heads cams and pistons ect. Right now the shortblock has stock rods and pistons. I those should be the first to go. Were not is a hurry, but we are about to get started on this build.

A 4.15" crank, H-beam or aluminum rods, lightweight pistons, a good solid or roller cam, and either the Victor, Indy SR's or 440-1 heads would be the starting point, cam design would be based on head, car weight, transmission, converter, rearend gearing, suspension system, induction system, and rear tires.

First: Congrats on the purchase. I too would be excited on potential. A 70 Challenger is a real looker. Im assuming too much work to make it some what streetable? An 11 second 500 horse Challenger can get you in some trouble on the street, but I would want to show it off.
Assuming it's life is that on the track I agree with Slingshot. I would look to stroke the shortblock. A 4.15" crank. Matched with the Ross flat top 99524 piston and stock length 6.768" rod (Blocked bored .040 over to 4.360) would get you to a 496. With a set of Edelbrock Victor heads 75 cc you should be at about 10.8:1 compression. (depending on how much the block was shaved to square up and head gasket thinkness.) If you insist on pump 92 gas you can use a thicker cometic gasket (.058 range) should get you to about 10.5:1. With the aluminum heads should be able to handle 92 octane. Add a Victor 440 intake and your Demon 850 Now, how badass the 496 can be would, as Dart said, definantly depended on the head porting/flow and cam profile. I also agree the cam profile should be selected last. I would have Comp Cams custom grind a solid roller when bottom end and head numbers are known. Along with vehicle weight, suspention, tire, rear gear, trans + converter stall (4000+) and application. (Drag Race only) A custom grind is not that much more expensive and better targets your build. Then Smith brothers can make your pushrods when cam/lifter type, valve spring strength and rod length are known. Well as you can see I sometimes yack too much. But this is simular to a build I'm considering for a 383 to my Road Runner (432 ci) all of this of course is just my opinion. There are many other paths to 700 hp. Which I believe is about the max for a 727 trans unless REALLY beefed up. It is a little spendy but I believe money is evil and what better way to get rid of it! Oh, and welcome to the site! thanks cuda drag, yes the 70 challenger is to far into a drag car to put on the street, Besides I lost my license on a regular basis when I was younger and I have no better sense now. The 440 thats in the car now has 17 passes on it since it was overhauled. I won't go into it but it turns 6.99 in the 1/8. The short block I have came with the car. I like your approach to the build and will start to gather info and pricing based on your post. I'll get a pic of the car up soon. Again thanks for the input and I will be asking a ton more questions I am sure. Ok here's an update on my 70 Challenger, we were runing 7.12 approx
pretty consistant. Put the MSD ignition system in new wires plugs distributor and box. Just turned 6.912 and followed up with a 6.914 consistant in that range. Didn't notice it so much in seat of pants but rather in the RPM going to the rev limit a whole lot faster. We took out the procomp headers that were dragging the ground and installed TTI headers and man did they fit good and we shaved off another tenth. Texas muscle Car Club Challenge fires back up in MAy and we will be ready!!!! Merry Christmas to all of you WIlson |

I have not been on here in a while. Just an update on the challenger.
we added MSD ignition, distributor, wires, TTI headers, Holley fuel pump, fuel cell, updated brakes, and a lot of little improvements. The car is running consistent 6.70 1/8 mile. Now if could just get that reaction time as consistent as the car!!! Anyway, just bought the crank for the new build. very excited about that. |
