Default 440 banging outta 5500 rpm

I have been running this 440 for three years now. Msd rev limited at 6500
Roller motor, demon 750, msd wires, billet msd distributor. I snapped a u joint
Pulled the tranny to check it out sent the converter off for a new hub( it was worn and leaking).
Put it all back together and now it sounds like the msd box is rev limiting at 5500. Runs a consistent 6.94 1/8. 60' is the same, turns 98 MPH.
But starts the banging at the end of the 1/8. I used to run the 1/4 and with 456gears it was on the rev limit at the end of 1/4.
I set the msd box to 2000 and checked it and it will limit at 2000.
I set it to limit at 7000 made a pass and still missing t 5500. It's not popping,
It sounds like rev limit. I changed the plugs, no diff. I had a fuel pump give up on me, it's got a new fuel pump. I. Don't have a fuel press. Gauge in the car its under the hood. Im not thinking fuel press. But not ruled out yet.

I'm hoping for suggestions on this one.

Thanks>>>>>> Wilson

I would look at engine timing or possible valve spring pressures if everything else checks out ok.

I would try without the limitator. Also check distributor.

I checked distributor, also set the rev limit at 2000 fired it up it limits ok.
Set limit to 7000 and it won't make it past 5500 during a pass.
I didn't mention I can get 6500 no problem in the burnout and hold it during the burnout.

Check for bad grounds. Directly grounded to battery is usually the very best.

Just curious? How was the sprag/overunning clutch?

Clutch was ok, sprag had problems. The planetary gear housing rolled on the shaft splines and I had to cut it out with a torch.
Grounds are good and direct to bat.
Changing plug wires next.

Check valve spring pressure, check coil, try closing up spark plug gap to .025" and see what that does.
