If you were driving a big truck you would either have to double clutch or shift without using the clutch. The reason for this is you have to match the speed of the gears you are shifting into by using the rpm of the engine. If you just push the clutch in and try to shift it will not go into the next gear (no synkronizer). If you are going up through the gears you would clutch, shift to neutral let off the clutch to allow the engine to slow the speed of the input shaft to match the speed of the output shaft gear you are going into. Once the speeds are the same you would clutch again and shift into the next gear. If you are down shifting you would clutch, shift into neutral let off the clutch hit the accelerator to speed up the input shaft to match the speed of the output shaft gear you are going into clutch again and shift into the lower gear. If you are on the clutch pedal the input shaft will free wheel and there is no way to control the speed of it with engine rpm. Shifting one of these takes some practice but once a person gets the hang of it they usually just shift without using the clutch.

The whole reason you do that in a race car is so you dont unsettle the suspention when your going into a corner. When you down shift and just let off the clutch the car will shift its weight rdically at racing speeds. Double clutching allows for the speed change and makes the car much gentiler, and less lilly to break the rear tires loose THUS making the car stop faster....
