There are several things.
Broken sealing ring could be one.
But, my experience, I had one that actually had the front clutch burn up anf it was not releasing. It acted like the converter was locked.

Welcome to the board tamahawk, I'm down the road near Sacto.

What makes you think the converter isn't disengaging? Motor stalls in gear?

just had the tranny rebuilt and put it in myself. What makes it feel like its not disengaging is when I come to a stop sometimes the torque converter stays engaged. I have to put it in neutral and then into park then back to drive or it will stall.

Ifthe convertor is staying locked it will die, Now, By torque convertor staying locked up are you meaning it doesnt want to launch (lugs) from a stop....Put it in Park or Neutral back into gear or drop it to Manual Low and it works fine????.........Governor Pressure Transducer and Governor Pressure Solenoid are messing up and need replaced on the V.B., If he wasnt very "clean" building it they could be plugged up, Ive seen that happen, also Ive seen new convertors come apart/flush out fine debris that will plugg the sensor and solenoid up and cause them to act this way.

Can be low fluid. Your builder might not have put enough in the tranny. Had it happen to our 2001, and fluid level was low after it was serviced. Proper level fixed it.
