Default Need help with Durango that dies intermittently

This is a 99 durango.
It has started to do this.
Just running down the road it starts miss firing and dies.
After sitting for 15 minutes it will restart.
It does have fuel and pressure.
There are no symptoms before hand other than it has an intermittent idle.
When it dies, the gauges will not read.
There are NO codes set.
All grounds appear tight and clean. I cannot find and damage to wiring.

I like this durango and don't want to get rid of it.
It has a 402 with all factory set-up.
It has given me 19 MPG in the highway.

I want to know if you think the computer is dieing or where to look.

ANYONE out there with an idea?

I am getting a code 1497.
Something with the evap system.
Could it be drawing too much current and overheating the PCM.???

I have had that same thing happen on an older truck. It was the coil overheating (going bad). Maybe something to check.

That code might be your gas cap. Maybe someone else will chime in on that.

Up date.
The code was 1495. My mistake.
This code says either a short or open on the leak detection pump!!

In three years it has never set this code.
This durango does NOT have one and is not required. Never was on it.

WHY now? What changed?
And of course, what to do about it.
My dealer service writer is stumped. He said his go to guy is on vacation, will be back next week.

One more thing.
It also set a code for the purge soleniod. This was during the time the PCM would get hot--very hot.
So, I put a new purge soleniod on it. No code now, and the PCM is staying cool.
I even thought maybe a previous owner put the wrong PCM on it, but the parts guy said no I had a stock one and correct number.

So WHY is it setting a code for something that was never installed? Can the feature be turned off by the dealer?

It will also run maybe 3-5 minutes then starts to run a little rougher, then the fuel guage drops to zero and the low fuel light comes on and of course chimes!!! Reset this code and the guage works for 3-5 minutes. Tank is full.

Do you have tilt wheel? If so, how often do you use it?

Yes it has tilt wheel but I seldom use it. Pretty much stays in the same position all the time. A friiend suggested that, so we had it running and started moving it from top to bottom with no issues. I also wiggled the key while driving and nothing happened.

I will go talk with dealer number two today to see what they can suggest.

As I know, it needs the leak detection pump to find the cap loose or leaking!
I have driven it with the cap loose and it did no different long before this issue came up.
Thanks.

It has a new coil about 2,000 miles ago. It does not seem hotter than normal.

The LDP code won't affect anything. Probably the PCM. Take a gallon jug of water and pour it on the PCM when it shuts off and won't restart. If it starts back up, it's a driver in the PCM overheating. BTW '99 Durango's are notorious for this with miles. You WON'T find one used.

Well, it quit on me again this morning on a paper route. This time it would NOT link to my code retriever and said in the od window, no bus. Thumbed a ride home, got my truck and towed it home.
Got home it starts and runs again. I did try the water on the PCM and it did nothing. Actually today the pcm was NOT hot, just warm.
I'm mad and disapointed in it and am about to say the 'f' word---ford.
I drove it all week and it seemd to be ok. But when I depend on it it drops me like a rock.
Could it be a harness issue?

HELP.

Doubt it. You could try and wiggle the PCM connectors while it's running and see if it dies. That doesn't necessarily mean it's a connector. Could be a loose pin on either side. I'd bet PCM for this particular vehicle, but know way to verify that unless I had it at the shop. Sorry, I know this doesn't help much.

I won't find a used durango or a used PCM?
It now shows the same code BTW. No new ones.
If no one can help me fix this, it will sit or be traded soon.

Who can verify this for me?

Is there a difference in the wiring harness wire material between 98 and 99?
Copper in 98 and aluminum in 99 is what I suspect.
Corrorsion from dissimular metals causing heat and resistance is what I suspect.

As I would get time, i have played with the durango.

This is what I find as I play with it.The front PCM harness gets 50 degrees or more, hotter.
it needs to run for a long time.
I unplugged the Purge valve because it is a common code setter. I then watch the temps drop on the harness!!! This purge valve has been replaced by me. So either this one is bad or this is a related issue and not the direct issue.

Does anyone know the resistance in this valve? I'm seeing 53 ohms.
I did as a test, added a 150 ohm resister to the 5 volt wire on it.
Now the harness stays cool like the other two.
I need more time to test before I'm convinced this is the cure.
