Default engine confusion

I bought an engine today and I'm not positive what I got. Guy said it was an 86 2.5. I looked and it has the same air box and TBI as the 85 2.2 and has a 287 head. I thought the 2.5's all got the 782 head and that the newer style TBI and air box started in 86. Did someone put this head and intake on? I'll look more tomorrow and find the engine casting # which I know will tell me for sure what this is. I know that folks have said look at the casting # but, I can't find anyone that says what numbers or letters designate the .25 or 2.2 Is it the same as the vin? I'll also check the timing cover.

Both engines used that head. You'll have to check the block numbers to see if it's a 2.2 or 2.5 or pull the oil pan and see if it has the 2.5 balance shafts.

I am unaware of any 2.5 getting a 287 head but ya never know with these things. Look at the crank shaft. I gonna bet it is a 6 holer and what you have is an 85 2.2.

talked to the guy i got the engine from and he is sure the car was an 86 and said 2.5 but he did not buy the car new so it sure could have had a different motor put in. maybe i'll just not stress over it, put it in and get something running while I sort the chassis and work on a stronger motor. seems like some prefer the 2.2 anyway. By the way I do have the casting # etc unsludged and readable. is there a place i can go to look up the #?

went to the mopar performance book ( yea imagine that, a printed book) and found the block casting #'s. the engine is indeed a 2.2 pre common block. the casing # is 4343530-1. the book lists this a s a turbopart # but lists no # for the standard block so it must be the same. also does anyone know what the -1 means? the book does not list the -1 after the #
