My car, killed by a deer
2 miles from home last night and out of nowhere came this big buck. It was just that time of day where the sun wasn't completely down but it was pretty dark, but not dark enough for the headlights to be really effective. I saw his head and big rack and his shoulders, then BAM!!!
I was in my '95 Intrepid that has been my daily commuter for 8 years now. It didn't owe me a cent; I bought it in late 2004 for about $1800, with 54,000 miles on the clock. Last night, it had almost 236,000 miles on it. I've replaced the battery twice, and put tires on it a few times but other than that, it was a good, trouble-free car.
I don't think it's worth fixing. The windshield is smashed, the right mirror is ripped off, the right fender is bent and pushed into the front door, the hood is wrinkled and pushed up in the right rear corner and (I haven't opened the hood yet) it looks like the inner fender is all bent where the hood hinge attaches on the right side.
What a surprise that was. I live in the country on dirt roads so I was only going 35 or 40 when I hit the buck. In 9 years out here, that's the first deer I've hit. I've sent a lot of rabbits to the promised land, and the occasional bird here and there. I even clipped the rear hoof of an antelope once but the car and the antelope were no worse for the wear.
But I think it's terminal for this car. Darn. It was a good one, and even has pretty new tires! Now I have to get something else to drive.
