Default 2.5 or 2.2 for rebuild

I have an '87 Lebaron with a non-turbo 2.5L. The engine has over 160 000 miles and is due for a rebuild.

I know that the parts for a 2.2 are more plentiful so I was considering that for rebuilding and swapped in place of the 2.5.

My question is.........does the 2.2 bolt up the same (tranny, converter, mounts, etc.).

Can I just unbolt the intake and leave it in the car and then bolt it on to the 2.2? I just want to eliminate unbolting as much as possible.

I was thinking of swapping in a bigger cam....like the 450 lift Crane Cam part number 580111.

How much do you think this will hurt mileage.

I was also considering using Keith Black piston KB239 as a replacement piston in the rebuild on the 2.2.

I was also thinking of milling the head and using the MP shorter belt. I was told that the 2.2 doesn't have a clearance problem so do I have to check piston to valve clearance after the milling. Should I check before?

Since all Dakota pickups with a 4 cyl don't have balance shafts and work fine I was going to build the 2.2 without one.

Tell me want you think.

I'm not sure, but I believe none of the 2.2 engines had balance shafts. I'm pretty sure it was just the 2.5s

That's correct,only the 2.5's use balance shafts,not the 2.2's

I just talked to a mechanic that swore up and down that you can't remove the balance shaft as it will cause the crank to be out of balance. I said to him that none of the 4 cyl in the dakota's never had balanced shafts and he said they were balanced differently. ?????????

Help.......

I don't think removing them would be so widely recommended if there was even a chance of a problem. look at the guys that drag race these things. they pull them out as their first mod and run two and three times as much HP as most of us with no problems. I think they're just a comfort thing. made then engine smoother and more refined feeling than than the 2.2. most car buyers would rather have a smooth ride than a few extra ponies...

How close are the 2.2 and 2.5. How many parts can interchange. Since the 2.5 has a longer stroke does it also have a longer deck height?

Are the heads the same?

Is it worth the effort to blueprint the engine (I'm in no hurry).
