2.5L Rear Wheel Drive possibility...
After skimming through the websites and info about the Neon DOHC conversion on the 2.5 block, I'm thinking that would make a great motor for a light chassis like a rear wheel drive kit car or 240Z conversion. So, how about this. Take the bellhousing from the 94-95 2.5L Dodge Dakota with the AX15 5-speed and marry that up to the 87-92 Toyota Supra R154 5-speed and you've got a match made in heaven! They are basically the same tranny and have the same bolt pattern so it will fit. Gear Ratio's are:
1st 3.30:1 2nd 1.95:1 3rd 1.34:1 4th 1.00:1 5th 0.75:1 Rev 3.20:1 I think it would work. Greg Williams |

Amazing those holes do look like they line up. It would definitely be sweet if they did and would be one less road block to getting power to the rear with these engines.

They not only LOOK like they line up.... they DO line up. The bellhousing fits the transmission. Period!

Although looking back again the 94-95 2.5L in the daks, wouldn't that be the jeep version and not the 2.2/2.5 block that people are using with the DOHC conversions?

No, Jeep (Magnum) 2.5L didn't come along until 96 in the Dakota. 94-95 Dakota had the K car 2.5 bolted up to the AX15 5-speed.

In photo: Left is 94-95 K car 2.5L Bellhousing, Right is 96-99 Magnum 2.5L Bellhousing. Different bolt patterns on the engine side but the same on the transmission side.

That transmission to the bellhousing thing is an interesting possibility. I've got a 1991 Dakota in the back now for scavenging parts -- does it use a similar bell housing? I had one person contact me who said they put a V8 behind the stock tranny (with the right bell housing adapter) and had no problems. I've also had people tell me they've shelled the thing behind a 2.5L engine. Right now I'm optimistic that dropping 1200-1400 lbs. (The dak is 3060 lbs) that the stock tranny will live behind a mild turbo engine in my Morris.

How is it even possible that the two would actually bolt up?????. They are from two totally different manufacturers! That is really odd that they would share the same bolt pattern.

Transmission vendors
Remember, that not all parts on your car are made directly by Ma' Mopar. I suspect the case design was one already thought out and the transmission manufacturer just re-used it elsewhere for their project. Nevertheless, as you can see from the pics, they are a bolt for bolt match to the Supra Turbo tranny.

Actually they are NOT built by different manufacturers. They are both built by Aisin-Warner which also builds other flavors of the same design and sold to different companies. Think about how many versions of the T5 and T56 Tremec builds for Ford, GM and Chrysler. Aisin-Warner does the same thing for Chrysler, Toyota and Isuzu (Yep, there's an Isuzu version too... called the AR5).
