96 cherokee 5.2L worthy enough?
i'm looking to purchase a 96 G. Cherokee ltd with the 5.2 w/ 130,000 miles; I am familiar with and love the 4.0L engines as they have proven to be dependable, torquey, and just all around great. i am not familiar with this motor at all and i just want to know if these engines are troublesome, have any common issues or failures, or should be avoided like other newer mopar crap (Durango). Most newer engines from any manufacturer are crap so i'm not biased at all. what's the mpg on the 5.2 anyway? any input is openly accepted.!!

I got 13 to 15 mpg out of a 5.2 in my 95 4x4 Ram depending on how heavy my foot got. 166,000 miles and thats the only thing in the truck I've not had to rebuild. All I ever did to it was change plugs, wires, cap, rotor button and Idle Air Control Switch.

The 5.2 is basically a modernized 318, A bulletproof engine if there ever was one. Think of it as having had the same treatment they did on the 4.0 when it got EFI and became the high output. I have a '92 Dakota that has 186K on it it has never been apart. These weren't all easy miles I towed my tandem axel car trailer, probably half of those miles. I don't use it as much these days, due to the fuel mileage. If any criticizem I have of this engine it is the fuel mileage. Although not terrible it was not designed for $3./ gallon gas prices.

nhdriver, if you say the 5.2 is as reliable as the 318 then you have said enough. my 318 has over 160K of snow pushing and the most stretched timing chain i had ever seen in my life and it ran like a pack mule!!! think i'll buy this truck after all........

Put a three inch exhaust, a K&N FIPK, and go to town. I did this on my 94 and the mileage went up to high 16s around town, and 18-19 on the road. Contact this guy..... kolak@aol.com for good deals and advice on the JGC.

I've run 318's in 3 of my demolition derby cars. I've broken axles, snapped front end and blown trans. The 318's kept starting and running. One was so hot the entire block was glowing red...and it kept on running. None of them started their derby career with less than 150,000 miles on them.
